Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

What other measures do you think might be effective?

Essay:

There is a view that pressing traffic and pollution problems can only be tackled if the governments
make the fuel expensive. Although this practice can solve the problems to some extent, I think other
more viable solutions should be considered, such as creating more efficient public transport, road
infrastructure and cleaner vehicles.

Advocates of the increased petrol price think that this can prevent people from buying cars. And
people cannot afford overly expensive fuel to drive their cars. As a result, the number of cars on the
roads will decrease. If there were fewer cars, the pollution level would decrease as one of the biggest
contributors is cars with combustible engines.

In my opinion, however, there are other more feasible solutions to traffic jams and pollution problems.
One of them can be the introduction of a better public transport system in cities. In other words, public
transport should be more frequent and have better conditions. If so, we can encourage citizens to use
buses and the underground more often. Not only does this initiative reduce traffic congestion on the
road, but it also decreases each individual’s carbon footprint.

Another measure that can be considered is an improved road infrastructure. This means governments
should make roads wider so traffic flow will not slow. This, in turn, solves the traffic congestion
problem in the long run. On an individual level, people should buy more electric vehicles instead of
combustive engines. Electric cars burn electricity, which can be generated by solar power, thereby
reducing pollution levels overall.

In conclusion, while high price petrol can be a deterrent to traffic and pollution problems by
discouraging people from purchasing cars, I believe this is not a single solution that exists. Other viable
measures – improved public transport, road infrastructure, and eco-friendly transport - can help
address these two problems.
