Changing trends in Social work practice

As a society is formed of various community along with difference in culture and


tradition, norms and values, religion and belief and so on . Moreover ,there prevails
varieties in social ,economical and cultural activities. Hence ,this leads to the
social inequality leading to various social problems.

When a social worker faces or comes in contact with the problem regarding
individual, group or community, he\she tackle the prevailing problem using several
tools and methods to some context. In general, the activities performed by the
social worker or Ngo is social work practice. The activities performed or tools and
method used can vary due to structure and condition of the prevailing problems. As
a whole, social work practice can be said as the activities performed so to
overcome the prevailing problems to some extent.

In ancient times, when an individual get in trouble, the people in community


helped each other which lead the trend of initial social work practice. For example
giving alms to the beggar in our society, donating money or foodstuffs and clothes
to helpless one's are some starting phase of such social work activities. But the
change in formation of advance society lead to drastic change in concept and
vision of social work practice. Changing trends in Social work practice can be
categorized as follows :

1.Charity based

Social work activities under this mainly focuses on monetary support for the client
or needy people. Conducting various charity program, one can collect some funds
so to solve the problems of the client to some extent. Providing financial support is
the main motto of this kind of social work activities .Fund raising program for the
flood affected areas with the consent to working organization can be a good
example of charity based social work practice
2.Need based

Need and problems of one individual, group or community differ. The need and
problems of one's individual, group or community are different to each other.
Social activities done on the basis of need and importance are need based social
work activities.

For example Development of road infrastructure is important in Karnali region


rather than other region of Nepal. So activities regarding building needs to be
conducted with the consent to concerned authority.

3.Right based

As a society is bounded with rules and regulation. Along with these term ,rights
and duties of an individual are also allocated by the government. When there is
violation in rights and duties of any individual there arises a social problem. When
a social worker or Ngo works for the fulfillment of rights of the children women
and vulnerable group. Such type of social practices is mainly focused on rights of
an individual, group or a community. Working for the rights of Dalit community
can be a good example of right based social work practice

4.Welfare based

Welfare based social practice is mainly focused on welfare of a group or a


community. All the activities performed which benefits social, economical and
cultural aspect of the society people are under these types of social practices.
Awareness program regarding girls trafficking and drugs abuse can be some
example of welfare based social practices
5.Participatory based

Participatory based social work practice is focused on participation of individual,


group or community in social work activities. When a social worker comes into the
problems of client. He\ she utilizes the locally available resources so to identify
and solve the problems of client gradually to some consent. In this type of social
practices, client, his \her society and as a whole community people are involved .

For example. While constructing a bridge which connect people of one village to
another, equal participation is enhanced in such activities from both the village.
This can be a good example of participatory based social work practise.
