Job Scope
A Railway Structures Design Engineer is required to support various
programmes (e.g., Piccadilly Line Upgrade, 4LM, Renewals and
Enhancements and Roads, Streets & Places (Surface Rail)).

The Railway Structures Design Engineer will be responsible for


producing technical documentation (e.g. technical requirements
specifications, conceptual designer’s statements, calculations,
drawings etc.) and provide technical input to other stakeholders in
meetings and/or documentation.

The Railway Structures Design Engineer will be required to undertake


site visits during both traffic and engineering hours, providing
technical input and undertaking inspections.

Key Accountabilities
• Ensures the safety, functionality or compliance of high risk
newly implemented or altered assets, engineering processes,
procedures or systems
• Leads the development and implementation of high complexity
engineering solutions within Railway Structures, through the
provision of subject matter expertise
• Provides internal and external senior stakeholders with
appropriate challenge and professional advice to ensure the
development or delivery of high quality, tested engineering
solutions
• Represents TfL Engineering as a Subject Matter Expert for
Railway Structures when engaging with suppliers, customers,
industry bodies and external agencies, identifying and
influencing best practice to enable continuous improvement
across TfL
• Makes authoritative technical recommendations which have a
high impact on organisational performance in both the short
and longer term
• Evaluates, selects and applies appropriate solutions to high
risk/value/complexity engineering problems that improve
efficiency or effectiveness, while improving safety and reducing
operating costs.
• Leads a culture of continuous improvement through the use of
best practice, innovation, whole life cost optimisation and
effective root cause analysis

• Responsible for undertaking design documentation (e.g. CDS,
calculations, design drawings etc.) with minimal supervision
• Responding to RFIs and technical queries
• Reviewing documentation from external suppliers
• Providing technical support on all Railway Structures activities

Knowledge
• At least Incorporated Engineer with the Institution of Civil
Engineers or Institute of Structural Engineers, or equivalent.
(Essential)
• Knowledge of Inspection, Assessment, Design and Construction
of Railway Structures Assets (Essential)
• Knowledge of legislation, technical standards and industry best
practice related to Railway Structures (Essential)
• Knowledge of health and safety standards and environmental
considerations applicable to Railway Structures (Essential)
• Knowledge of applicable LU and other Railway Structures
standards (Desirable)
• Commercial awareness (Desirable)

Skills
• Ability to review external suppliers design assurance
documentation
• Ability to effectively engage with, manage and influence
stakeholders
• Ability to produce technical documentation and reports
• Ability to identify and evaluate options, including cost and
timescale implications

Experience
• Civil/Structural Engineering designer able to prepare designs,
check drawings & write, review and accept civil engineering
scopes for designers and contractors with minimal supervision.
• Designer with at least 3 years of recent structural design
experience.
• Experience in the rail industry
• Experience in the following areas in structures: conception,
specification, design, construction and commissioning.
• Co-ordination of multi-disciplines requirements with the
development of civil engineering solutions.
• Meeting programme deadlines to meet cost and engineering
solutions
• Regeneration of railway properties and refurbishment of buildings
• Hands-on surveys and using design and technical standards
Eurocodes / BS standards
• Experience in applying professional engineering judgement to
support low risk / complexity projects or operational activities
