Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda a.k.a
PEPE
• Born on: June 19, 1861 (Wednesday)
• Father: Don Francisco Mercado “Tatay”
• Mother: Doña Teodora Alonzo “Nanay”
• Born in: Calamba, Laguna (between 11 o’clock
and midnight, few days before full moon.)
• The 7th Child among 11
• Baptized by: Fr. Rufino Collantes
- He has 6 names. 2 given Christian names and 4
surnames
- The name Jose was because of her mother. She
was a devotee of St. Joseph
- St. Protacio is the patron Saint of June 19
- martin, pipit, & other birds, listening “with
PEPE’S BIG HEAD
• Pepe’s mother almost died during delivery due to
his big head.
• Baptized by Father Rufino Collantes and stated,
“Take care of this child, for someday he will
become a great man.”
Who chose Rizal for family name?
• Great grandfather of Jose Rizal was Chinese
merchant DOMINGO LAMCO who later on
adopted the surname MERCADO.
• In Laguna, many families adopted the family
name Mercado.
• To distinguish Lamco-Mercado from other
Mercados who are not related to them, the
ALCALDE MAYOR (their family friend) suggested
the addition of another surname Rizal.
• Rizal traced from the word Ricial which means
green fields.
• This is a Spanish term which means “a field
where wheat stalks are cut still green, to sprout
again.”
THE CHILD RIZAL
• He was frail, sickly and undersized child
• Jose loved most his little sister Concha
(Concepcion) who was next to him.
Unfortunately, Concha died of sickness in 1865 at
the age of three.
• Spent his childhood days in the town of Calamba,
Laguna “Cradle of a genius”
• 1876, he was 15 years old and was student in
Ateneo, he remembered his beloved town. He
wrote a poem “Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo” (In
Memory of My Town).
Earliest Childhood Memories
• His father built a nipa cottage in the garden for
him to play in the day.
• The employed Aya (nursemaid) would tell stories
to Rizal about fairies, legends, tales of buried
treasures and other fabulous stories.
• At the age of three he watched from his garden
cottage the culilan, maya, culae, maria-capra,
wonder and joy” to their twilight songs.
• Daily Angelus Prayer
• He also remembered the happy moonlight nights
at the “azotea” after the nightly rosary
• Nocturnal walk-in town, especially when there
was a moon
• Rizal wrote: “Thus my heart fed on somber and
melancholy thoughts so that even while still a
child. I already wandered on wings of fantasy in
the high regions of the unknown”

Pepe
▪ Encouraged him to learn swimming,
fencing, wrestling, and other sports

SCHOOL DAYS IN BINAN

• At the age of 3, Rizal learned the alphabet from

his mother.
• Leon Monroy, old friend of his father, teach him
in writing, reading, and Latin but unfortunately
the man who lodged with them for 5 months
soon died
• 1869, His father decided to send him to Binan to
continue his studies. Accompanied by his
brother, Paciano (former pupil of Maestro)
• They reached Binan after 1 and half hours ride
abroad a carromota
• The following morning (Monday) Paciano took
him to the house of Maestro Justiniano Aquino
Cruz, nipa house abt 3o meters from the house
of their aunt.

Activities in Binan

• Systematic and methodical daily activities of Rizal

• He studied his lessons when he heard the 4
o’clock mass in the morning.
• After mass, he looked for a mabolo fruit in the
grove and ate it then he will take his breakfast
(boiled rice and 2 fried sardines)
• Then he will go to class which was over at 10
• He goes back to school at 2am, and was out at
5pm
