Goals
The objective of this workshop is to understand the effect of damping on a mechanical structure, and how to
apply damping.

Description
We will assume a discrete system, that consists of 5 mass-spring systems as shown below. All masses are 1kg,
and the value of each stiffness as:

• K1 = 39.48 N/m → f1 = (1/2) 𝑲𝟏Τ =

𝒎𝟏 1.0 Hz

• K2 = 88.83 N/m → f2 = (1/2) 𝑲𝟐Τ =

𝒎𝟐 1.5 Hz

• K3 = 157.92 N/m → f3 = (1/2) 𝑲𝟑Τ =

𝒎𝟑 2.0 Hz

• K4 = 355.3 N/m → f4 = (1/2) 𝑲𝟒Τ =

𝒎𝟒 3.0 Hz

• K5 = 631.65 N/m → f5 = (1/2) 𝑲𝟓Τ =

𝒎𝟓 4.0 Hz

Project Schematic
Open the Project page.
From the Units menu verify:
• Project units are set to “Metric (kg, m, s, C, A,N, V)”.
• “Display Values in Project Units” is checked (on).

Project Schematic
• Begin a new Workbench session and, from the Project page, choose “Open“ and browse to the file
“AT01.1_Damping_in_Ansys_Mechanical_Input.wbpz” and Open the zipped file. This file already has the
geometry and springs edited.
• Otherwise users can create a set of 5 cubes in SpaceClaim and place a vertical spring with the
aforementioned stiffness values in Mechanical (Springs are given in Fundamentals Module). The resulting
model should be as shown in the image.
• When prompted, “Save” using the default
name in the same location as the archive file.
