Grade 8 Adventure Day
written by Ezra Manuel and Kamvalethu Mampangashe
Photos by Ms August

This year, on 19 January 2023, was

another year of the annual Grade 8
adventure day, The Grade 8s took busses
and left for an exciting adventure. The
most common question you might ask of
a Grade 8 learner after the experience is,
“was it fun?’’ Kamvalethu Mampangashe
says," realising now the hike we took to
get to the venue might have been a
warm-up because the real fun started
when we got there." Some say it was
probably the longest walk they ever took.
Yeah, they can exaggerate but the day
was filled with fun activities. Each year
we see new faces with the same
excitement for high school sparkling in
their eyes and this year's adventure day
was another success.

Nande (8T): On the day of the adventure
day, I was very excited for the activities we
were going to do, and I could not wait for it.
We had to walk when we got there. I was
very tired yet when we got there. We got to
do so many nice activities and they were to
die for. I thank all the helpers who helped us
complete the activities and if I get another
opportunity, I will go there again.

Yuraiya(8E): It was a very

interesting experience
because it was all so new. It
was fun, though, and we all
made some memories.

Mivuyo(8E): Extremely tiring. It was a fun day

even though there were some ups and
downs to it. Loved the animals that were
there!! The walk to our destination was LONG
and TIRING but enjoyable.

Ezra(8E): It was fun in the bus getting to the

place, singing songs, and laughing and even
dancing. When we got there, it was a very
long walk. I mean very long. The activities
were super fun and some people, like me,
even got an egg smashed in their hair, but
that day I experienced fun, laughter, and joy.

Interview with Ms January
Written by: Lisakhanya Mthembu

At the end of 2022 we bid farewell to many of

Westering’s long-standing teachers and received a

I interviewed Ms January to learn more about her

MRS SOLOMON INTERVIEW

My future plans are to inspire all my learners

Westering High School offers many sports and one of Vol 8 Issue 22
the most successful is athletics. We decided to
interview the star athletes about their experiences
going through to metros, their goals, dreams, and
what they think it takes to make a star athlete.

What inspired you to start running?

Owam Sompani: What inspired me is really just my
hate for losing. Since a young age, I’ve strived to be
the best and it kind of grew into me becoming a really
good athlete. What keeps me motivated is an athlete
named Su Bingtian. We are both short and have to
race with people who are taller than us, yet he
manages to beat them.

Linathi Goniwe: My parents but more especially, my

mom since she was a runner back in her days and so
she’s the biggest reason I got into running.

Sheranay Van Rooyen: My whole family played sports

so it’s kind of in our genes. My father was also an EP
runner and an EP rugby player so for me to live up to
my mother and my father’s sporting careers is what I
really want to do. I’m also doing this for my uncle who
passed away last year; I would like to make him
proud.”

What strengths do you believe you possess that

makes you a great athlete?

Sisa Dyassop: Discipline. Discipline is one of the most

important components that you can have in life.
Without discipline, you won’t make it anywhere in life.

Ambesa Mbombo: I’m already a sporty person but I’m

also very determined. I push and motivate myself, so I
think that’s my strength.

Do you have anything that you would like to

accomplish in the next five to ten years?

Linathi Goniwe: Yes, actually, I would like to become a

successful lawyer. If that doesn’t work out, I would like
to be a primary school teacher and as a hobby, do
athletics or play hockey for South Africa.

Mpilontle Meko: I want to transition to a marathon

runner, and I would love to join SA team. I also want to
run in the Olympics one day, hopefully in 2025 or 2026.

“The only one who can
tell you, ‘You can’t
win’ is you and you
don’t have to listen.”
– JESSICA ENNIS-HILL.

Which is your favourite moment in your athletic

career?

Lathitha Titi: When I came first in 200m u/14.

Sisa Dyassop: It had to be the time I got called up to be

in the A team in u/14 rugby; I actually started in the B
team because I couldn’t play rugby and then I
surprised the coaches, so they picked me to be in the
A team.”

Ambesa Mbombo: Not a favourite moment but it’s the

people I go against. I feel like they challenge me to
become better at what I do.

Sheranay Van Rooyen: Definitely this year when I came

first in all of my races.

Was it your first time at Metros and how was your

experience?

Owam Sompani: Yes, it was my first time at metros this

year. Due to past injuries and the pandemic, I was
never able to get this far. I was expecting my
opponents to be way faster than they actually were.
My goal was to be placed in the top 3 and I came
second so I was really happy about that.

Why are you so passionate about playing sports?

Lathitha Titi: Sports brings the best out of people. It

shows who we really are, and it shows what people are
capable of besides academics.

Ambessa Mbombo: Sports, for me, is fun to do and

having fun while doing sports is the most important
part in your school life.

At the metros our athletes have proven that they put in

everything they had to bring pride to our school and,
most importantly, to themselves. We are so proud of
these learners for their accomplishments, and we
hope they continue to break through in the athletic
community.

LET'S GO TO
THE MARKET
By : Zandile Klaas

On the 10th of February 2023 the school hosted a

market day in the hall where learners could sell
all kinds of fun treats/items from brownies to
knitwear the learners went all out! There were
pancake stands, popcorn stands, brownies,
jewellery items on sale and so much more!
I got a chance to interview several individuals on
what made them want to participate in this
market day, if they sell outside of school and how
they decided on the items they wanted to sell,
three of them stood out.
A boy in grade 8 who was selling pancakes to
finance his hobbies to help out his parents. He
decided on selling pancakes because his mother
always made them for him and were his favourite
treat after a long day and is planning to sell them
outside school in the future.
I interviewed a grade 11 girl who was raising
money in order to help a friend who is doing
athletics in order to buy new running shoes
A young grade 8 girl was participating because
she wanted to gain experience for the future on
how to run a business as she hopes to become
an entrepreneur in the upcoming future.
All in all, the market day was a huge success the
hall was packed and there were several sold out
stalls.
A huge thank you to Mrs Harker and the YES
COMMITTEE members for organising and
ensuring everything went smoothly
