Anticipated benefits to MSMEs

Benefits Applicable (Yes/ No) Explanation (please explain how the proposed solution will

2
yield this benefit)
Improve efficiency Yes Agri e-commerce platforms can streamline farmers'
access to buyers, creating new links between stages of
the value chain, leading to increased efficiency.

These platforms can help farmers overcome problems

with transport and post-harvest wastage by arranging
delivery, storing produce, and generating demand
through sales and marketing.

By reducing post-harvest wastage, agri e-commerce

services improve market efficiency and ensure fresher
and more nutritious produce reaches customers.

Mobile operators can play a role in improving

efficiency by providing training, support, and financial
assistance to agri e-commerce start-ups.

Mobile money providers can also contribute to

efficiency by partnering with agri e-commerce
businesses to improve the efficiency of order deliveries
through their widespread distribution networks

Access to market Yes

Agri e-commerce platforms provide farmers with
access to a wider range of buyers, including agri
businesses, retailers, restaurants, and consumers,
thereby expanding their market reach.

These platforms enable farmers to bypass

intermediaries, resulting in higher income, reduced
wastage, and the potential to deliver fresher produce to
customers.

Agri e-commerce platforms can connect smallholders

to markets, allowing them to sell their produce directly
to buyers, increasing their income and reducing
reliance on middlemen.

Examples of successful agri e-commerce platforms

include James Tyler in China, Eragano in Indonesia,
and Frubana in Colombia, which have facilitated direct
sales between farmers and consumers or businesses.

The GSMA's agri e-commerce Market Attractiveness

Index highlights the maturity of key markets,
indicating the potential for farmers to access markets
through these platforms
Enhanced outreach Yes
Agri e-commerce platforms can enhance outreach by
employing field agents to visit farmers and explain the

3
business model and benefits, or by partnering with co-
operatives, farmer societies, or government agencies.

Farmer-to-farmer recommendations and referrals can

also be effective in increasing the number of farmers
on agri e-commerce platforms.

Governments can play a role in enhancing outreach by

establishing an enabling regulatory environment and
providing information on local farming regions to raise
farmer awareness of agri e-commerce opportunities.

Donors and investors can contribute to enhanced

outreach by investing in agri e-commerce businesses
that have a sustainable competitive advantage and
potential to scale.
Increased income & profit Yes
Agri e-commerce platforms provide smallholder farmers
with the opportunity to earn higher income compared to
traditional channels, with some farmers earning more than
$100 per month.

By connecting farmers directly to buyers, agri e-commerce

platforms eliminate the need for intermediaries, allowing
farmers to receive higher prices for their produce and
increase their profit margins.

Agri e-commerce platforms also reduce post-harvest

wastage, improving market efficiency and ensuring that
farmers can sell more of their produce, leading to increased
income.

The expansion of a social group with a higher amount of

disposable income, such as the middle class, drives interest
in ethically sourced local produce and fresh, organic food,
which agri e-commerce platforms can provide, leading to
increased sales and profit potential.
