Topic 1

1. Multiplication- repeated addition; an operation where you join equal groups to get a total called the product
4+4+4+4+4 5 fours 5x4

2. Factors- the numbers being multiplied in a multiplication equation

4 and 5 are factors in 4x5=20

3. Product-the answer to a multiplication problem

20 is the product in 4x5=20

4. Equal groups-groups that have the same number of objects; equal groups can be represented with repeated
addition or multiplication

5. Equations-a number sentence that contains an = sign to show that two expressions are equal;
4x5=20 4+4+4+4+4=20

6. Unknown- the part of a math problem or equation that is not known; what is being solved in a math problem

7. Number line- a line with numbers marked at equal intervals

8. Skip counting-method of counting numbers by adding a number every time to the previous number
2,4,6,8,10…. 3,6,9,12,15…..

9. Expression- a math sentence with two numbers, or variables, and a math operation sign
4+5 4+n 4x5

10. Array-objects arranged in equal rows and columns; rows are horizontal and columns are vertical

11. Commutative Property of Multiplication- says that you can multiply factors in any order and the product is
the same; 4x5= 5x4

12. Division- repeated subtraction; division is an operation that is used to find how many equal groups there are or
how many are in each group

13. Quotient- answer to a division problem

4 is the quotient to 20 divided by 5=4
