Frottage
The technique was developed by Max Ernst in drawings made from 1925.
Frottage is the French word for rubbing. (You did this last week!)
Ernst was inspired by an ancient wooden floor where the grain of the planks become clearer after many years of scrubbing.
The patterns of the graining looked like strange images to him.
He
captured these by laying sheets of paper on the floor and then rubbing over them with a soft pencil. He turned his
rubbings

into mysterious forests and bird-like creatures.

Quick Questions

Which image captures your attention? Why? Can you tell what Ernest has used to create his rubbings?

*Avant-garde - the people and ideas that are ahead of their time.

Collage
Collage describes the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and
other materials are arranged and stuck down onto a surface.

Landscapes
Landscapes capture natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forest

Cityscapes

Your task!
You are going to use your rubbings from last week to create a picture. You can collect more rubbings to use as well!

1. First you need to collect some source material. Research and collect some cityscape images for you to base your picture
on. I have chosen London cityscape. Below are some of the images I collected to help inspire my picture.

2. Spend 5-10 minutes sketching some composition* ideas. Just the outlines are needed.

3. Cut up or tear your rubbings to create some of the shapes in your picture. You might want to collect more
rubbings. Place them on a plain piece of paper. Think carefully about their position. Move your rubbings around a
few times and try different compositions. When you are happy, glue them down.

4. Now add some more detail.Take a pencil and out some outlines or more texture.

*Composition - is the placement or arrangement of the visual elements
