COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE

Experiment no.1 Date of Submission: June 23, 2023

Name: Mark Gino M. Cano Instructor: Engr. Ma. Aimee Yabao

Part I. Kinematics (Speed, Velocity, Acceleration)

1. As you go home today from the university (state the vehicle you ride), record your trip time
and the distance you have traveled. Calculate your average speed in mile per minute.
Given: (Type of Vehicle : Motorcycle)
1mile
distance=13 Km × =8.08 miles
1.609 Km
time=35.08 minutes
Required : average speed ∈mile per minute?

Solution :
Total distance
Average speed=
Total Time
8.08 miles
Average speed=
35.08 minutes
Average speed=0.23 mi /min

2. Set the lobby of the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) as your starting point.
Choose a destination (final position) from anywhere on campus. Record the time and distance
you walked to your chosen destination and back to your starting point. Determine your speed
and velocity in meter per second. Assume a straight-line route.
(Speed)
Given :(CEA Lobby ¿NWSSU main GATE)
distance=120 meters
time=129 seconds
Required : speed ∈meter per second ?
Solution :
distance
speed=
Time
120 meters
speed=
129 seconds
speed=0.93 m/s
(Velocity)
Given:
Required : velocity∈meter per second ?
Solution :
The velocity is zero since thetotal displacement is zero .

3. Jog one lap on the campus oval, calculate your speed in kilometer per hour.

Given:
1km
distance=431 meter × =0.431km
1000 meter
1hour
time=6.5 minutes × =0.108 hour
60 minutes
Required : speed ∈kilometer per hour ?

Solution :

Part II. Dynamics (Force Parallel)

To investigate how a force parallel to an inclined plane changes, find a rubber band, some objects
to hang from the end of the rubber band, and a board you can position at different angles.

a. How much does the rubber band stretch when you hang the object from the end of the
board?
Orginal Length Of the Rubber :24 cm
New length: 29 cm
∆ L=l f −l 0
∆ L=29 cm−24 cm
∆ L=5 cm

(Figure: 1 displays the initial size of the rubber (Figure 2: displays the new length of the rubber after
objects to hang from the end of the rubber band)

B. Now place the board at an angle so that the object slides off when placed on the board. How
much does the rubber band extend if it is lined up parallel to the board and used to hold the object
stationary on the board?

Orginal Length Of the Rubber :24 cm

New length: 27 cm
∆ L=l f −l 0
∆ L=27 cm−24 cm
∆ L=3 cm

(Figure 3: Shows the new length of the rubber band after its extension
when aligned parallel to the board)

C. Try two more angles. What does this show?

@ angle=65 °
Orginal Length Of the Rubber :24 cm
New length(@angle=30 °):25 cm
∆ L=l f −l 0
∆ L=25 cm−24 cm
∆ L=1cm

(Figure 4: showcases the updated length of the rubber band when the
board is inclined at an angle of 30 degrees.)

@ angle=60 °
Orginal Length Of the Rubber :24 cm
New length(@angle=60 °) :26 cm
∆ L=l f −l 0
∆ L=26 cm−24 cm
∆ L=2 cm

(Figure 5: showcases the updated length of the rubber band when the
board is inclined at an angle of 60 degrees.)

I have observed that the angle of the board affected the length of the rubber band. When the board
was at a smaller angle, the rubber band’s tension decreased, causing less deformation. However,
when the board was at a steeper angle, the tension increased, and the rubber band experienced
more deformation. It’s important to note that the rubber band’s deformation depends on its
elasticity and how far it is stretched or compressed. Rubber bands have an elastic limit beyond
which they may permanently deform or break.
