Question 1

1.1 Differentiate clearly between the following terms and provide applicable workplace examples of each to
illuminate these differences. Also indicate the similarities and differences between the concepts. (12)

1.2 Interpret how each of the following terms relates to coaching and/or mentoring in the workplace: (6)
• Deviant workplace behaviour
• Causal attribution theory

1.3 Recommend how you will apply the six skills for effective face-to-face communication during coaching in
the workplace. (12)

Question 2

The literature indicates that there are certain pitfalls that a mentor or coach can encounter during
mentoring/coaching.

2.1 Reflect on any mentoring or coaching sessions that you have conducted in practice and identify the pitfalls
you have encountered in the literature studied. Mention the specific pitfall in line with the literature and provide
a practical example of each to illuminate your answer. (18)

2.2 Recommend practical and applicable solutions to effectively address each of the pitfalls identified above
in question 2.1. (12)

3.1 Differentiate between the different types of mentoring and coaching interventions that can be applied in
the workplace by referring to the following: types of intervention, description and workplace application. (18).

3.2 There are certain guidelines to implement effective coaching and mentoring in the workplace. Develop a
checklist that contains these guidelines that can be used to evaluate coaches and mentors in your workplace.

4.1 Reflect on an actual coaching analysis that you have been involved with or conducted yourself in practice.
Compare the steps followed in this coaching analysis session with those indicated in the literature and
recommend how this coaching analysis should be conducted in future using the actual steps indicated in the
literature. (12)

4.2 Differentiate, in table format, between the three-step and five-step coaching discussions. Use the following
headings in your table: description, steps involved in each, when used and when to apply each. Also indicate
the differences and similarities between the two coaching discussions. (18)
