ASSESSMENT
DATE SUBJECT: Science UNIT TITLE: Understand the importance
of atoms and molecules in everyday
chemistry!

TOPIC: Chemical bonding TERM: 3

NAME: CLASS: 8th- SCORE:

OBJETIVE: Criterion A

PREPARED BY: Bárbaro Eliecer Covián Grau CHECKED Head of science department
BY:

Criterion A: Knowledge and understanding

Students are able to:
i. Explain scientific knowledge about trends in the Periodic Table, and chemical
bonds.
ii. Apply scientific knowledge and understanding of trends in the Periodic Table and
chemical bonds to solve problems in situations both known as unknown.
iii. Analyze and evaluate information related to trends in the periodic Table and
chemical bonds to make scientifically based judgments.

Command Terms Definition

Apply Use knowledge and understanding in
response to a given situation or real
circumstances
Explain Give a detailed account
Analyze Break down in order to bring out the
essential elements or structure. To identify
parts and relationships, and to interpret
information to reach conclusions.

ACTIVITIES

Based on the following data of 3 hypothetical elements, X, Y and Z, answer the following
questions.

Data
X has atomic number 11
Y contain 8 protons in the nucleus
Z electrically neutral contains 18 electrons.

1. Apply knowledge about electronic distribution and determine in each element

valence electrons.
2. Write possible group and period in the periodic table. Explain your answer
according to the electronic distribution.
3. Analyze the possible combinations between these 3 elements and explain if they
could combine with each other to form chemical bonds.
4. Could atom Z combine with itself or with another? Explain the reason for your
answer.
5. Analyze the electronic distribution of element Y and explain the behavior of this
element and whether it could form bonds.
6. Apply your knowledge of electronic distribution and develop the Lewis structure in
the bonds that you think can be formed.
7. Can these elements ionize? Explain your answer. If it is the case, represents the
ions.

8. Analyze the data in the following table about the physical properties of the
compounds.

Substance or State of electrical electrical Melting

compound matter conductivity at room conductivity in point (0C)
temperature water solution

A Solid no no 85

B Gas no No -100

C Solid yes yes 1000

D Solid no yes 800

Data develop by the professor.

a. Explain which substances or compounds will be ionic, which will be covalent,

and which will have a metallic bond.
b. Apply knowledge about the physical properties of substances according to the
type of bond and make a table of at least 4 substances that are at home and
commonly used. The table must contain the following information: name of the
substance, chemical formula, possible Lewis structure and use.
9. Analyze the graph below and answer the questions.

Helmenstine, A. M. (2009, August 12). Electronegativity and Chemical Bonding.

a. Explain which groups on the periodic table could join to form:

ionic bond, single covalent bond, double covalent bond and triple covalent bond.

b. Analyze the data and using the periodic table, explain and exemplify some
combinations of the elements to form:
Covalent bond to polar or nonpolar and Polar covalent bond.

c. Explain how the oxidation numbers will vary based on the data presented. Give
examples.
