Unit 2
Module 2 Chemical Bonding
Since grade 7, you have
been using your Periodic Table
at some point in your Science
lessons. Can you still remember
the concepts behind the positions
of the elements within the
periodic table? You will have a
knack for understanding how the
elements could potentially
interact and bond with other
elements by just locating them in
the Periodic Table.
In this module, your
knowledge about the Elements
of the Periodic Table will
Fig. 1 Chemical Bonding certainly expand. We are going
Source: https://www.britannica.com/science/chemical-bonding
to learn about the types of bonds
and compounds that elements can form through the use of Lewis Electron Dot Structures
(LEDS). We will also explore the examples and the uses of such compounds in our everyday
activities.

At the end of this unit, you are expected to:

1. Recognize different types of compounds (ionic or covalent) based on their properties
such as melting point, hardness, polarity, electrical and thermal conductivity; and
2. Explain how ions are formed.

Week 3 Day 1
For the learner:
This worksheet contains activities about Ionic bonding and Ionic compounds. You may
answer directly to these activity sheets and make sure to follow the directions stated in each
part of the activity. Answer all questions the best that you can and please write legibly.
For the parent:
Learners may require your guidance in following the directions and answering the
questions in each part of the activity. Make sure that they answer each part of the worksheet.

ACTIVITY 5
WHAT TO KNOW
Ionic compounds are formed by bonds
between metals and nonmetals. To form
such a bond, one element tends to lose electrons,
and the other gains them with the aid of their
differences in ionization energy, electron affinity,
and electronegativity. Gaining an electron makes an
atom negatively charged – anion while losing an
electron makes if positively charged – cation.

Binary compounds are ionic compounds that

involve only two elements and the anion used in
monoatomic. Ternary compounds consist of three or
more different elements usually a metallic cation
and a polyatomic anion.

If we look around the common substances us

and even inside our bodies, there are numerous
examples of ionic compounds that play a vital role Fig. 2 Formation of Ionic Bonds

in our body functions and even in our day-to-day astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Chemical/lewis.html
physical activities.

WHAT TO DO (PROCEDURE)
PART A: NOMENCLATURE FOR IONIC COMPOUNDS
Directions: Write the chemical formula and name of ionic compounds formed from
the cations and anions given in the table below. Make sure to use the correct subscripts.
You may refer to a table of polyatomic ions for rows 5 to 7.

PART C: MEME-IFY THE IONS

Directions: Create a meme strip or comic strip about how
anions and cations are formed OR the difference between
anions and cations. Submit your work in a separate image file,
make sure to use a clear image resolution and size.

ACTIVITY 6
WHAT TO KNOW
We learned that ionic bonds are formed
by giving off and gaining electrons
between atoms. Covalent bonds, on the other
hand, do not need to take or lose an electron
completely, instead, atoms tend to share electrons
to be able to fulfill the Octet Rule (Duet rule in
Hydrogen). Since atoms tend to complete the 8
outer shell electrons to be able to achieve a stable
configuration like the noble gases; the formation
of single, double, or triple bonds enables them to
achieve a stable configuration.
