An Introduction to Vibration Isolator Selection

The Purpose of Isolators. Natural rubber materials show internal friction which may be approximated
to viscous damping with a ratio of C = 0.05. If C = 1 there is a condition
a) To reduce the transmission of forces from the mounted equipment to known as Critical Damping, when a mass if displaced and released will

b) To protect sensitive equipment from the motion of the supporting
structure. This equation can be plotted as shown in Figure 2 and it may be seen
when ω2 = k/m force transmission becomes infinite.
Disturbances may be steady state oscillations, non-repeating transients or
a combination of both. This is known as the state of resonance when the oscillation amplitude
would also be infinite without any damping. The other curves shown on

rubber or fluid filled dampers.
At present virtually all isolators are passive using steel springs, rubber 5.00

Figure 1. MASS Rather than transmissibility it is common to quote isolator efficiency which
is given by :

The efficiency appears to approach 100% as the forcing frequency
increases but in the real situation other factors such as flexibility in the
supporting structure and isolating material standing waves result in a

These frequencies are not usually apparent on most machines unless

normal operating speeds and harmonics avoid resonant conditions.

affected by internal resonances within its own structure.

is a function of the static deflection under the weight due to gravity. Figure

TSC Combined Steel Spring and Rubber Spring Unit Isolators
Sizes T1, T2, T3 & T10

A major advance in design has

successfully combined the best
characteristics of steel springs and rubber
springs to produce an efficient, compact
and economical range of unit isolators
suitable for many types of applications.
Many variants of these isolators, designed
and manufactured by us have now been in
service for more than twenty years.

TSC unit isolators are highly effective in

reducing the transmission of vibration,
structure-borne noise and shock from a
wide range of rotating and reciprocating
machinery and in protecting sensitive
apparatus from external disturbances.
They are particularly suitable for marine
and mobile applications as internal
snubbers are incorporated to control
movement of the isolated machine.

Type approval by Det Norske Veritas and

general type approval has been given by

loads of 12 kg to 780 kg (75 shore
rubber available in 17/1657 variant for
max load of 1100 kg to special order
only).

General type approval has been given

by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.
DESIGN FEATURES

Cushyfloat type mount uses zinc plated

steel components.
Resilient elements are first grade natural
rubber to metal bonded units.
Loading the rubber elements in a
combination of shear and compression
provides the optimum balance between
high load capacity and low stiffness.
 Rubber elements are contained and
protected within the top and base
metals. The shapes of the top and the
rubber elements are designed to
increase stiffness and control movement
under overload conditions.
 Rebound washers are incorporated to
control movement due to ship or vehicle
motion.
High lateral to vertical stiffness ratio of
the rubber elements assists in the
control of motion and in many instances
obviates the need for additional external
side and end restraints.
Low height compact units, ideal for use
where space is limited.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Genflex Rubber Mountings
Type Industrial & Marine - Sizes B & HD

Genflex mountings employ the well

proven inclined rubber element
design to achieve much higher
deflections compared to simple
rubber in compression devices and
therefore providing superior isolation
of low frequency vibration.

The pure rubber design offers

excellent performance in the audible
frequency range which cannot be
achieved with helical steel springs
even with so called “noise stop pads”.

Natural rubber also offers inherent

damping to control transient motion
resulting from machine start up, run
down and fault conditions.

For marine and mobile applications, a

combined overload and rebound
buffer is available in both the B range
and HD (high deflection) variants.

Open Restrained Spring Mountings
Types ORS25 & ORS50 - 2 & 4 Spring Variants

The ORS mounting has been designed

specifically for applications where
transmission of low frequency machinery
vibration to a building structure must be
reduced to avoid physical damage or
annoyance to the occupants.
It is a low frequency mounting specifically
designed to limit vertical movement on
equipment such as cooling towers and
chillers. This could otherwise be excessive
due to the low stiffness springs required to
provide isolation of low frequency vibration.
Applications located at roof level can be
successfully mounted on ORS units as any
movement caused by high wind loads will be
limited. Equipment which contains large
volumes of liquid will benefit from installation
on ORS mountings because during “draining
down” upward movement is restricted thus
avoiding damage to pipework and electrical
connections.
DESIGN FEATURES TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
High strength all steel construction epoxy powder Cooling Towers.
coated finish with B.Z.P fixings as standard. Chillers.
Optional Stainless steel fixings available. Large Fans.
Colour coded helical steel springs to BS1726 Air Handling Units.
Class B with nominal deflections of 25 mm and
50 mm and up to 50% overload capacity also
O/D equal to at least 80% of working height.
Vertical and lateral restraints have rubber inserts
to avoid metallic contact and adequate radial
clearance ensures isolation efficiency is not
impaired.
Springs located and seated on rubber washers to
reduce high frequency transmission.
Working height and vertical limiting stops are fully
adjustable.
6 mm thick ribbed rubber seating pad supplied as
standard.

Stud Rail System for Floating Floors
Type SRS

The principle of supporting two separate masses to

significantly improve the standard acoustic mass
law performance is well understood. The term
“Floating Floor” is a relatively new expression that
has gained favour in more recent years but the
method of supporting a floor structure on resilient
bearings off a structural slab has been applied and
developed by Christie & Grey over much of its 90
year history. Examples of this work still in existence
date back to the early 1960’s.

The development of structural materials has

enabled architects and engineers to make more and
more use of lightweight structures in modern
building design. This has highlighted the need to
consider carefully the noise, shock and vibration
transmission loss characteristics of these structures.
In particular, for high rise buildings, the proximity of
“noisy or high” and “quiet or critical” areas
significantly increases the potential for use of
acoustic and vibration isolation materials, including
floating floors. For example, it might be necessary
to isolate a plant room from office accommodation
below, reduce external noise such as low flying
aircraft penetrating the roof of a building or reducing
transmission of footfall impact noise from one
apartment to another below.

SRS floating floor systems have been successfully used in applications such as Plant rooms, Offices, Prestigious
Apartment Blocks, TV, Radio and Recording Studios, Cinemas, Concert Halls and Audiometry rooms.

DESIGN FEATURES
Laminated steel and natural rubber elastomer bearings are located beneath rigid steel channels positioned to suit the load
distribution arrangement.
Natural rubber bearings are true elastomers and are applied within their linear stiffness range to achieve the required design
performance, low creep and resultant design life.
Standard design can provide natural frequencies down to 6 Hz.
Profile permanent steel shuttering keyed to concrete for greater rigidity of floating floor slab.
All steel is galvanized and elastomer bearings are unaffected by water, vermin or other pests.
Floor thickness from 100 - 300 mm with imposed loads of up to 20 kN/m2.
Sound transmission loss is dependent upon concrete thickness and air space. Typically a type SRS floating floor can be designed
PL011/1 - OCTOBER 2009 - Rev. D

to provide a loss of at least 20 - 25 dB in excess of that provided by a single concrete slab construction.
Under the design condition, the life of a SRS floating floor system will be at least the life of the building.

Vibration & Shock Control

TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION
Floating floors can be provided externally on the roof as well as within the building.
The form of construction is similar for both instances although additional treatment
is required to fully weatherproof the external floating floor.

MATERIALS
The following materials are supplied to permit the construction of a floating floor.

Laminated steel and natural rubber elastomer pads type “Studflex”.

 Galvanised steel channel rails.
Galvanised steel profile permanent shuttering. Section through a floating floor showing the typical construction
at the perimeter with pads added to support an internal wall.
 Peripheral resilient lining material.
Permanent resilient peripheral sealant to suit application.
Where required, thermal/acoustic mineral wool void filler, fire barriers, damp-proof
membrane, edge closure materials and floor drains can be supplied.

ACOUSTIC BUILDING ISOLATION TREATMENT
Christie & Grey can provide products to cater for all aspects of Building Isolation. Care is taken in providing penetrations through the
floating floor for such things as drains, pipes, electrical conduits so as to avoid building “short circuits”.

Acoustic Ceiling Hangers Flexible Acoustic Wall Ties Penetration Detail

STUD RAIL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
The acoustic performance (airborne noise only) of a concrete floor slab can be estimated by the “Mass Law”. If the sound reduction index
(SRI) of a given thickness of floor slab is insufficient for a given application, then the logical approach would be to increase the slab
thickness. However, the Mass Law relationship shows that by doubling the thickness, the SRI increases by only about 5 dB and the
subsequent problem of providing additional structure to support very heavy floors may be impractical, particularly in high rise buildings.

By decoupling two floor masses with an air gap between, the SRI of the total structure under perfect conditions will be approximately the
sum of the SRI’s of the individual masses. In practice, this is never quite achieved because of the flanking transmission and low order
coupling via the airspace between the two masses. In the case of the SRS system, the space between the channel rails is filled with
mineral wool which has the advantage of reducing the build up of reverberant noise and acoustic resonances within the air space and
also provides an additional thermal barrier.

For critical applications such as ENCLOSURE TO REDUCE

TV, Radio and Recording FLANKING NOISE
FLANKING NOISE
Studios, Audiometry rooms,
Anechoic and Reverberant
Acoustic Test Chambers,
internal walls can be supported
off the floating floor to reduce the
effect of flanking noise
transmission.

To control the transmission of structure borne noise, the SRS system in standard form has significant advantages over other systems in
that it is possible to design a floating floor with natural frequencies down to 6 Hz (for exceptional circumstances, lower frequencies can be
achieved).

In many circumstances, this may permit plant to be located directly on the floor or at least mounted off the floor with a simple spring or
rubber vibration isolation system. In the situation where a massive item of equipment needs to be located on the floating floor, which may
cause a significant asymmetric loading condition, it may be necessary to provide a machinery plinth which locally penetrates the floating
floor structure upon which the individual item of plant may be mounted and isolated in the most appropriate manner. Where internal walls
are supported off the floating floor, flexible acoustic wall ties can be provided to brace between internal and external walls to maintain both
structural and acoustic integrity.

Irrespective of the complexity of the application, a comprehensive design and site installation service using our own experienced staff is
provided to ensure specified noise criteria are met and maintained.

The SRS floating floor system has been subjected to tests by independent consultants in accordance with International Standards and the
static and dynamic characteristics of the natural rubber elastomer bearings have also been independently tested.

Neoprene Bonded Cork
Type NBC

Neoprene Bonded Cork (NBC) pads are a

simple solution to the problem of high
frequency noise and vibration produced by
many industrial machines.

Pads can be adhered directly to the

underside of machine bases or be laid
directly onto the floor with minimum
preparation of the surface and without the
need for grouting or rag bolts.

NBC is made from cork granules bonded

into sheets by a neoprene rubber matrix.
The combination of these materials
provides a high load capacity with
resistance to oils, spirits, water and cutting
fluids.

Natural Cork Area Isolator
Type Coresil ®

Coresil is an effective and widely

approved anti vibration material
designed primarily for large high load
applications where isolation of
medium to high frequency noise and
vibration is required.

With these qualities Coresil has over

many years established itself as the
leading material for the isolation of
printing presses including those
producing household names such as
“The Telegraph” and “The Sun”.

DESIGN FEATURES
 In the manufacture of Coresil
specially selected high grade natural
cork is trimmed and cut into strips which,
after being arranged to take full
advantage of the natural resilience of
cork, are bonded together by an efficient
adhesive to form a sheet.
The sheets are made as standard at a
thickness of 50 mm with 25 mm
available. Sheets of other thickness can
be made if required.
 The recommended maximum static load
is 10750 kg/m2 for the Standard grade
Coresil and 38000 kg/m2 for the High
Density variant.
 The maximum static deflection is
approximately 1.0 mm per 50 mm
thickness (0.5 mm for 25 mm).

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
 Printing Press Foundations.
 Concrete Foundation Blocks.
 High Speed Rotary Compressors.
 Jet Engine Test Beds.

Figure 3 shows a typical arrangement of area isolators

beneath a concrete block for a machine. As is often
the case, the loading is asymmetric and it is important Coresil Area Isolators Concrete or Steel angle curb

of the area and are arranged so that their centre of Coresil Area Isolators
area coincides with the centre of gravity of the machine
and block combined. Light density resilient cork is used
over the remainder of the area as an infill to support
the concrete. To prevent percolation of the concrete
when it is poured a polythene damp proof membrane is
supplied to cover all the isolating material.

Steel Spring Unit Isolators
Type ODL/ODS

Working under extremely exacting

conditions throughout the world, these
adjustable steel spring unit isolators
have proved outstandingly successful
in the control of vibration, structure
borne noise and shock. They are
made in a large number of sizes so
that precise load and frequency
requirements can be met and are
suitable for the isolation of a very wide
range of machinery.

DESIGN FEATURES
 Vertical and horizontal machine
movement, due to dynamic forces can
be controlled by turning the adjusting
screws on the tops of the isolators - this
very desirable feature is not possessed
by other types of isolators.
 A very robust construction and
conservative spring stresses assure that
the life of the isolators is at least equal to
that of the isolated machine.
Helical steel spring to BS 1726 Class B.
SG iron castings to BS EN 1563 EN-
GJS-400/15.
A ribbed rubber seating pad is available
obviating the need for costly HD bolts for
many industrial applications.
ODL and ODS isolators are not
detrimentally affected by oil or water and
extreme temperatures do not cause any
appreciable change in their excellent
characteristics.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
 Centrifuges.
 Chillers.
 Engine Test Beds.
 Generating Sets.
 Pumps and Compressors.

Shock and Flexibly Mounted Machines

What is meant by Shock ?

Any transient non repeating force or displacement can be considered a shock. Usually the period of such an event is similar to or
shorter than the natural period of motion of the equipment being considered.

The disturbance may be a force as might be created by a short circuit across an alternator or a displacement such as an earthquake.

The magnitude of a shock is normally large enough to give rise to concern that damage will occur to the machine or its supports. In
some cases the functioning of the machine will be affected during the shock although no permanent damage will result.

1) Earthquakes - A typical ground motion of about 0.5 g acceleration with most energy below 5 Hz and mainly horizontal. One
earthquake may last 30 seconds and the amplitudes of the ground may be considerably amplified by most building structures.
Mounted equipment may be subject to significant floor motions at well defined frequencies.

2) Explosions - Short duration impulsive forces which can give rise to long period resonances in buildings or other structures.
Examples include charges used for seismic surveying, quarrying, terrorists' bombs and naval gunfire or under water mines.

3) Collisions - These include problems with vehicles, items on conveyor belts and packages being dropped.

4) Internal forces - These particularly affect electrical generators and reciprocating machines, as with passing through
resonances during start up, shut down and short circuits.

Typical Shock Isolation of a Generator Set

Isolation of an Electronic Cabinet

Methods of Shock Analysis

There are two main approaches to determining the response to shock.

1) Time history - A model is created on the computer and its responses over successive small time steps are calculated to form a
continuous history of the machine motion.

2) Spectral response method - A more general method based on the theoretical response of a single degree of freedom
damped spring/mass model at each frequency of interest. The individual responses for each mode of motion are built up in a complex
response for three dimensional methods.

The models used to represent the machine include rigid

masses with springs and viscous dampers allowing for
translation and rotation in the three dimensions. A number
of masses can be interconnected to represent, for
example, a system of three machines flexibly mounted on
an isolated floor. The analysis generally leads to a report
of the maximum acceleration and relative displacements
at positions of interest enabling the probability of damage
or malfunction to be assessed. Particular care is taken
over the flexible connections such as pipe bellows or
shaft couplings which are frequently vulnerable to
damage during shocks.

Simplified Models
Shock problems create large displacements which cause
mountings to buffer. Indeed many mountings incorporate
flexible stop units to control this effect. Whilst these non
linear effects can be included in complex models, the
results are often difficult to understand. Often a simpler
one or two dimensional model will provide accurate
enough results to enable the basic system to be refined.
The calculation shown here is an example of such a time
history. Comparison with a more complex method using
a three dimensional non linear analysis has shown
maximum displacements and accelerations to be very
similar, the simpler method requires less time to set up
and run.

Shock Mounting Types

Shown below are some typical mountings. In many cases a 'shock mounting’ is a vibration isolator used with resilient stops to control
motion. In most cases damping is essential either using separate viscous dampers or using the internal damping of the rubber material.

Type FCR.

Load range 300 - 2000 kg.

Static Deflection up to 30 mm.
Shock Deflection up to 60 mm.

Type PD.

Load range 750 - 2500 kg.

Static Deflection up to 16 mm.
Shock Deflection up to 25 mm.

Type RM.

Load range 10 - 300 kg.

Static Deflection up to 6.5 mm.
Shock Deflection up to 15 mm.

Type X.

Load range 5 - 550 kg.

Static Deflection 6 to 12 mm.
Shock Deflection up to 60 mm.

Military Shocks - Land based control centres.

Many military bases include facilities hardened against attack. These may be subject to underground explosions and require protection of
delicate machinery. The shocks are often specified in the form of machine response spectra and the equipment to be protected is usually
of commercial standard with fragility levels below the anticipated shock levels.

The mountings are usually rubber or damped steel springs with travel of up to 60 mm in all directions. In order to reduce the peak forces
on the equipment the springs need to be of linear stiffness. Examples are the Types FCR and X Mounts shown above.

The large relative amplitudes induced require highly flexible pipe and cable connections. These are often of considerable mass and may
need shock analysis in their own right to ensure satisfactory performance.

For some projects the shock displacements are smaller permitting the use of mountings with stop units in built. These tend to transmit
PL028/3 - JUNE 2006 - Rev. C

higher accelerations whilst restricting the relative displacements. An example is the Type MPM shown above.

Naval Shock

Of the conditions met at sea, there are three that concern us here.

1) Collision with another vessel or wave induced shock - This results in relatively small hull accelerations (up to
about 3 g) even on small craft. However, the relative displacement can be large if the duration of the shock is
greater than the machine mounting system natural period. Approved naval mountings such as the type PD are used
with separate resilient stop units to control the displacement under ship motion conditions. If no other shock is
present, a commercial marine mounting with internal stops is often employed.

2) Intermediate shock from gunfire or wave slamming on fast patrol craft - Accelerations of up to about 10 g may be seen usually of
short duration and small relative displacements. Commercial mountings with robust internal stops such as our type TSC may be employed
although each application will require a response calculation to ensure adequate strength and deflection capability.

3) Underwater explosions - These produce much larger shocks with seatings acceleration of over 200 g. Most standard specifications
show this maximum input shock reducing if a higher mass is attached to the seatings, since the force impulse can only create a finite
momentum. However, flexible mountings reduce the effective mass since the system prevents the reaction force from being transmitted
back to the seating. A calculation can be made of this effect so that a prediction of the seatings time history can be made from the motion
curves presented in the specification. Since these shocks combine larger displacements and accelerations, the mounting system is usually a
compromise incorporating resilient stop units set with sufficient clearance to permit some relative displacements whilst reducing the peak
acceleration. A shock of 200 g and 40 mm displacement may be reduced to about 15 g and 25 mm displacement on the equipment, but
much depends upon the shape of the shock pulse and the allowable clearances.

In some cases yielding devices such as stretchable bolts are incorporated to absorb more energy. However, these would normally require
replacement after an attack and hence their design is to protect against higher shock forces only.
