NATIONALISM
ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA:
the individual’s loyalty "it is commonly equated with love
and devotion to the of country, which it is not"
nation-state surpass other
individual or group
interests.
OXFORD DICTIONARY:
t he desire by a group of
people who share the same
ethnic group, culture,
language, etc. to form an
independent country.
SUMMARY
Not only is this political ideology a feeling of an individual, but
it is also a philosophy of power that builds and strategizes
methods in order to maintain power for survival and prosperity.
It is also highlighted in the passage that a nation’s strength
and power is much more crucial than the mere love of its
people, noting that a weak state is vulnerable to exploitations,
resulting to its inability to protect its citizens. The need for a
state's strength and power is a factor relating to the constant
competition among nations, as seen in trade, economic
conflicts, and wars. In relation to a state's strength,
independence is also a priority as it is a factor that attributes to
maintaining power. Ultimately, this passage is Lichauco's
argument that nationalism isn't just a feeling, but a philosophy
that enhances the importance of strength and power in a state
for it to prosper and survive. Philosophy is the key factor in the
success of a state irregardless of its economic state.
Nationalism is both a power
and a philosophy of power
