Midterm Exam in Power Plant Engineering (PPE).

20points each

Problem 1.) In a Rankine Cycle, the turbine work is 1000 kJ/kg & pump work of 13kJ/kg. If heat
generated by generator is 2800 kJ/kg, what is the efficiency of the cycle ?

a.) 35.25% b.) 40.75% c.) 38.65% d.) 30.25%

Problem 2.) In an ideal Reheat cycle, the steam throttle condition is 8Mpa & 480°C. The steam is then
reheated to 2Mpa & 460°C. If turbine exhaust is 60°C, determine cycle efficiency.

a.) 38.3% b.) 24.3 % c.) 34.3% d.) 45.2%.

Problem 3.) Steam is delivered to turbine at 5.4Mpa & 600°C, before condensation at 31°C, steam is
extracted for FWH at 0.6Mpa. For an ideal Regenerative cycle, find the thermal efficiency.

a.) 23.45% b.) 34.34% c.) 28.34% d.) 44.14%

Problem 4.) A small steam turbine plant of 5,000kW capacity has a full load steam rate of 6kg
steam/kW-hr. No-load steam consumption may be taken as 10% of the full load steam consumption.
Write the Willan’s Line of this turbine at 60% rated load. Calculate the hourly steam consumption of this
unit, in kg/hr a.) 19,100 b.)19,300 c.) 19,200 d.) 19,500.

Problem 5.) 23.5 kg of steam per second at 5Mpa &400°C is produced by a steam generator. The
feedwater enters the economizer at 145°C and leaves at 205°C. The steam leaves the boiler drum with a
quality of 98% . The unit consumes 2.75kg of coal/second as received, having a heating value of 25,102
kJ/kg. What would be the overall efficiency of the unit in percent ?

a.) 73 b.) 84 c.) 88 d.) 92.
