Separation Distance (m)

The mathematical relationship between electrostatic force and separation distance is inverse square
proportional. If the separation distance is doubled, then the electrostatic force is decreased by a
factor of four. And if the separation distance is tripled, then the electrostatic force is decreased by a
factor of nine.

Charge on 2 (C)

The mathematical relationship between charge and electrostatic force is directly proportional. If one
of the charges is doubled, then the electrostatic force increases two times.
Questions

1. In Part 2B, what happened to the force when both charges were doubled?
When both of the charges were doubled, the force will increase four times greater.

2. Describe the forces between positive and negatively charged objects.

The electrostatic between positive and negatively will produce a negative electrostatic
force which means that the two charged objects are attracted to each other.

3. In each trial, how does the force on circle 1 compare to the force on circle 2? How would you
describe the nature of electrostatic forces?
The force on circle 1 is different to the force on circle 2. Circle 1 is attractive while circle 2 is
repulsive. You will be able to describe the nature of electrostatic forces by the presence of
positive and negative sign on the electrostatic force value. The force is attractive if it is
negative and the force is repulsive if it is positive
4. According to the graph produced in part 1, what is the relationship between separation
distance and electrostatic force?
The mathematical relationship between electrostatic force and separation distance is
inverse square proportional. If the separation distance is doubled, then the electrostatic
force is decreased by a factor of four. And if the separation distance is tripled, then the
electrostatic force is decreased by a factor of nine.

5. The magnitude of the electrostatic force between two charged objects is 10N when they are
separated by a distance of 10 m. If the same charges were separated by a distance of 5m,
what will be the magnitude of the electrostatic force between them?
The magnitude of the electrostatic force between the two charged objects will be 40N.

6. According to the graph produced in part IIA, what appears to be the relationship between
charge and electrostatic force?
The mathematical relationship between charge and electrostatic force is directly
proportional. If one of the charges is doubled, then the electrostatic force increases two
times.

7. The magnitude of the electrostatic force between two charged objects is 10N.
 If the charge strength of one of the objects is doubled, what happens to the
magnitude of the electrostatic force between them?
If the charge of one of the objects is doubled, the magnitude of the electrostatic
force between them will also be doubled.
 Suppose the charge on both objects is doubled. What happens to the magnitude of
the electrostatic force between the two objects?
If the charge on the both objects is doubled, the magnitude of the electrostatic
force will be quadrupled.

8. According to your observations of part III, how does the sign of the charge (+ or -) affect the
electrostatic force between two objects?
It determines whether the two objects will attract or repel each other. Unlike charges
attract and like charges repel.
