2. The Earth’s resources provide what humans need to live comfortably and sufficiently. Which among the resources
below are used for fuel?
A. water and sunlight
B. oil and coal
C. wind and sunlight
D. wind and water
3. It has been scientifically proven that almost all human activities cause to destroy the Earth’s natural resources. Which
one of the choices below is the most destructive among them?
A. deforestation
B. throwing garbage anywhere
C. incorrect use of batteries and ink
D. large-scale use of plastic product
Notes:
The Earth’s natural resources include air, water, soil minerals, plants, and animals.
They are used to make food, fuel, and raw materials for the production of goods.
Natural resources such as coal, natural gas, and oil provide heat, light, and power.
Natural resources are materials from the Earth that are used to support life and meet people’s needs.
Renewable Resource – a resource that can be repeatedly and does not run out because it is naturally replaced, such as
solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass.
Nonrenewable Resource – a natural substance that is not replenished with the speed at which it is consumed; it is a finite
resource like fossil fuels, oil, natural gas, and coal).
There are four major types of nonrenewable resources: oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy.
Crude oil is a liquid fossil fuel that is used mostly to produce gasoline and diesel fuel for vehicles, and the manufacturing
of plastics. It is found in rocks below Earth’s surface and is pumped out through wells.
Natural gas is widely used for cooking and heating homes. It consists mostly of methane and is found near oil deposits
below Earth’s surface. Natural gas can be pumped out through the same wells used for extracting crude oil.
Coal is a solid fossil fuel that is used for heating homes and generating power plants. It is found in fossilized swamps that
have been buried beneath layers of sediment. Since coal is solid, it cannot be extracted in the same manner as crude oil.
Nuclear energy comes from radioactive elements, mainly uranium, which is extracted from mined ore and then refined
into fuel.
Directions: Complete the table below by identifying the uses of the Earth’s materials assigned to every individual.
Choose your answer below.
Notes:
To sustain Earth’s resources means the use of components of biological diversity in a way and at a rate that does not lead
to the long-term decline of biological diversity.
Maintaining its potential to meet the needs and aspirations of present and future generations should be the
responsibilities of everybody in:
2. Some living organisms lose their habitats and migrate to other areas, affecting the balance of local populations. Which
human activity contributes to this problem?
A. logging
B. mining and quarrying
C. overfishing
D. overhunting
3. Nitrates and phosphates accumulate and cause eutrophication in freshwater. What will be the possible effects of
eutrophication?
A. Sea-level rise and extreme weather events.
B. Living organisms lose their habitats and migrate to other areas.
C. Decreases the amount of oxygen present in the water.
D. Deforestation and increases the possibility for flooding due to soil erosion.
5. Which of the following human activities may lead to the extinction of species?
A. logging
B. burning of fossil fuels
C. mining and quarrying
D. overhunting and overfishing
Notes:
There are activities on Earth, particularly created by humans, that alter the composition and the abundance of natural
resources. Several human activities seriously affect our natural resources. In the end, it is also humans who greatly suffer
because Earth’s diversity tends to deplete or deteriorate.
Use of Plastic
Waste plastic is everywhere on Earth, even in the oceans. The chemicals present in the plastics are released in the
waters.
Logging
Logging is the process of cutting, processing, and moving trees to a location for transport. It may include skidding, on-site
processing, and loading of trees or logs onto trucks or skeleton cars. Trees are being cut down for timber to make
furniture and paper and paper products. Some of these practices may result in deforestation and increase the possibility
of flooding due to soil erosion.
Water Pollution
Nitrates from organic fertilizers, phosphates from detergents, organic wastes, and solid wastes are the main pollutants of
freshwater. Marine waters are usually polluted by oil spills from oil rigs from ships during transfer across the sea. The oil
can be harmful to plant and animal life in the waters.
3. If there were lots of garbage in the lakes and oceans, how are you going to help in reducing its effect on the
environment?
A. Conduct a clean-up drive.
B. Don’t swim in the lake and oceans.
C. Ignore what others do.
D. Throw more garbage.
4. Which among the following is a way in reducing the effect of human activities on natural resources?
A. Burn fossil fuel.
B. Conserve water.
C. Pollute the air using chemicals.
D. Use aerosol spray.
There are various ways to conserve these resources. We can reduce the use of natural resources in the following ways:
1. CONSERVE WATER
Water is indeed an essential natural resource that is not that abundant in supply. Almost all the world is facing a
water crisis in different regions and conserving water has become the need of the hour. We can bring change by
changing our daily habits.
• Do not let water flow while brushing your teeth or washing utensils.
• Use buckets instead of showers or you can take short showers.
• In watering the plants, use ample water and do not overwater your garden.
2. SAVE ENERGY
The majority of our energy is produced by burning fossil fuels and we see that once we start saving energy, we
will naturally save our fossil fuels. We can save energy by walking more or riding a bicycle instead of using a
motorbike or riding a car. Use public transportation rather than driving a car all alone. Most importantly, turn off
the lights and fan when not in use. Replace all your old appliances with better and more efficient ones. These
little steps will have a huge impact on energy consumption.
Recycling is very important in our world today, there was lots of piled garbage around. Always remember to
reduce, reuse, and recycle your old products or materials. Switch to cloth bags and reuse them instead of plastic
bags. Recycle plastic products to reduce the usage of plastic.
