Self-Learning Module 3
Projectile Motion
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 9 Self-Learning Module 3 on Projectile Motion!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 9 Self-Learning Module on Projectile Motion!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

RECAP

In the previous discussion you have learned about uniformly accelerated

motion or simply UAM. Find terms related to UAM. Use the description given below
as your guide.

Word Hunt

Hint:
1. Path travelled by an object.
2. How fast an object travelled with a given direction.
3. Rate of change in velocity.
4. 9.8 m/s2 is the Acceleration due to ________
5. Motion of a body where gravity is the only force acting upon it.
LESSON
Have you tried playing on-line game most specially during this time of
pandemic? Have you tried playing Angry Birds? What is your strategy to hit a target?

Angry Birds Gameplay #1 Poached Eggs Level 1-21 on Make a GIF

Figure 1: Angry Bird On-line Game

As an angry bird move to hit the target it moves both in x and y directions
simultaneously. This form of two-dimensional motion deals with projectile motion.
A projectile is an object upon which the only force acting is gravity.

Projectiles include objects that are thrown horizontally and objects that are
projected at an angle.

Figure 2: Object thrown Figure 3: Object released

horizontally forward is a upward at an angle to the
projectile, provided that the horizontal is a projectile,
influence of air resistance is provided that the influence of
negligible. air resistance is negligible.
An object in projectile motion follows a parabolic path. This path is called
trajectory. The horizontal distance (dx) travelled by the projectile is called the range.
The maximum vertical distance (dy) the projectile reached is the height.

Figure 4: Projectile launched horizontally

Figure 5: Projectile launched at an angle with the horizontal

In a horizontally launched projectile the object moves horizontally forward and

vertically downward. The horizontal velocity (Vx) is constant and equal to the initial
horizontal velocity (Vix). Since the object falls from rest the initial vertical velocity (Viy)
is zero.

Figure 6: Projectile launched horizontally

When an object is projected from rest at an upward angle, its

initial velocity can be resolved into two components. These two components operate
independently of each other. The upward velocity undergoes constant
downward acceleration which will result in it rising to a highest point and then falling
back to the ground. The horizontal motion is constant velocity motion and undergoes
no changes due to gravity.
Figure 7: Projectile launched at an angle with the horizontal

In real life, the projectile motion finds applications in sports like playing
basketball. The player shoots the ball in such a way that the flight taken by the ball
is in the form of a parabola. Other sports that show projectile motion include football
and volleyball. Projectile motion is also applied in some street games including
dampa and sipa.
