EXPLAIN

What is travelogue?
 A travelogue contains vivid descriptions of the place you’re travelling in
such as:
o Descriptions of the subjective experiences of a visiting place (your
thoughts, blunders, fears),
o Informed commentary about a place (its history and culture)
o Accounts of your interactions with local people.

Is travelogue an academic writing?

 A travelogue is not an academic writing, so you need not make a formal
argument and present evidence.
 It is not a write up for tourism board or a marketing agency, so you don’t
need to sell the destination to your readers
 It is not a guidepost or a blog post, rather a creative narrative of your
experiences in travelling.

What are the tips in writing a travelogue?

1. Tell one specific story
2. Describe the outer world using vivid descriptions
3. Reveal the inner world (your thoughts, mistakes, missteps, blunders,
excitements, etc.)
4. Provide informed commentary (historical, political, cultural, etc.)
5. Talk to locals and describe your interactions with them.
6. Use a conversational tone and avoid fancy/big words, marketing jargon,
and guide book speak.
7. Begin with an intrigue, something going wrong, or a compelling or
captivating moment.
8. End with a resolution, a moral, a message, or a revelation.
