Dear Chief Minister Chow,

Re: Renewable sources of energy in Penang

I am writing to you to discuss the issues related to the usage of fossil fuels in Penang. I am
concerned that fossil fuels are slowly destroying our planet, which provides so much for us, and if
we don’t change anything right now, I’m afraid it might be too late. In this letter, I want to present
some devastating facts about how much our actions regarding producing electricity affect the
whole atmosphere. I want to show some more eco-friendly alternatives that will provide identical
results.

According to the most recent data, in 2021, only 6% of energy came from renewable energy
sources in Malaysia. Malaysia’s most common energy resources are natural gases, petroleum and
other liquids, and coal. Oil and other fluids equal 37%, while natural gases result in 36% and coal
21%. These numbers are similar in all parts of Malaysia, including our state Penang. Fossil fuels
are by far the most significant contributor to the global crisis we call climate change. They
account for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90% of all carbon dioxide
emissions. This is devastating as we slowly watch our planet, our home, die. Every day we decide
to do nothing to change these numbers; we deprive future generations of any chance of the
‘normal’ life we know. We are killing our families, our neighbours and ourselves by not taking
action while it’s still not too late. If the average temperature rises by 1 degree Celsius, we are all
doomed. If we don’t change anything, this will happen by 2030, and the consequences will be
catastrophic. Do we want that future for ourselves and our children? Will we continue doing
nothing, or will we finally take action to save our home?

We can save our future right now. There’s no time to waste as it might be too late sooner than we
can imagine. As shown above, fossil fuel usage is the largest contributor to global warming. This
can change as we take action to gather energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar, hydro
or tidal. By investing in renewable energy sources, not only will we save the future of Earth, but we
will also improve living conditions right now. Many people are suffering and end up in hospitals
due to lung damage caused by carbon dioxide emissions. Renewable energy will save lives now
and for generations to come. Malaysia is located at the equator, meaning that we are privileged
enough to receive power from the sun all year long. That’s why I encourage you to consider
investing in solar energy power. Upland International School has been trying to limit their use of
fossil fuels by promoting renewable energy, such as solar panels. Solar panels transport the
energy from sunlight into electrical charges that produce electricity in response to an internal field
in the cell. Say yes to changing lives and saving everybody on our dear planet by taking action
today.

Thank you for allowing me to share my views on this horrible issue that causes many problems in
our lives. I hope you realise how much fossil fuels affect our planet and take action before it’s too
late. I wish you all the best, and have a wonderful day.

Sincerely you,

Eden Rogers
