BRIEF INTRODUCTION
One of the important services provided in
the salon is hair shampooing. Shampooing is a
process which includes wetting the hair, apply
and massage of a product into the scalp and
rinsing it out. It is done in the salon for three
reasons: 1) to remove excess natural oil, skin cells,
dust and dirt; 2) to remove the build-up of hair care products and; 3) to
prepare the hair for further treatments. Before a main service such as haircut
or hairstyle is given, the hair is usually shampooed to prepare the hair and
make it more manageable. It is also done after a hair treatment such as hair
color to remove excess chemical from the hair. The shampoo service is an
opportunity to provide the client with quality relaxation time as it involves
massage of the head. A good and relaxing shampoo may result to a good
relationship with the client and eventually ensure patronage.
4
Materials, Implements and Equipment Needed in Giving a Shampoo

Gathering and preparing all the necessary materials and implements

before starting shampooing service will help in minimizing time and effort as
well as in making the client comfortable. It would be an annoying experience
for to the client to have him or her wait while rushing out to get shampoo or
other necessities. Required materials, implements and equipment for
shampooing the hair are the following:
A. Materials and Implements Use for Shampooing

1. Shampoo cape -used to protect the client’s

clothing from getting wet.

2. Towel- basically used as a drape along with

shampoo cape to prevent the clothing of the
client from getting wet. Another towel should
be prepared to blot excess water from the hair.

3. Shampoo- hair care product designed to clean

the scalp and hair. It also removes excess
sebum in the hair follicles.

4. Conditioner- a special chemical agent used as

moisturizer that helps in restoring the hair’s
strength, gives body to the hair and protects
hair against breakage. This is an excellent
choice for dry and damaged hair. However, this
should not be applied prior to a hair treatment.

5. Wide toothed comb-a kind of comb used to

gently brush wet, conditioned hair without
causing breakage.

5
B. Equipment used for Shampooing

1. Shampoo chair-reclined chair with foot rest

to facilitate hair shampooing.

2. Shampoo bowl- specialized type of sink

typically found in hair salons used to
provide a full shampoo or to easily wet the
hair in preparation for treatment. It has
curved cutout designed to accommodate the
back of a client’s neck while the hair is
washed.

3. Shampoo bowl spray hose- equipped with

stopper for fast and convenient washing and
rinsing of hair.

Types of Shampoo
There are many types of shampoo available in the market, and as a
hairdresser, you should be able to select shampoo that support the health of
the specific type of the client’s hair. The following are the types of shampoo
that can be used in the salon.
1. Conditioning shampoo, also known as moisturizing shampoo, is
designed to make the hair appear smooth and shiny and to improve the
manageability of the hair. Protein and biotin are just two examples of
conditioning agents that boost shampoos so that they can meet current
grooming needs.

2. Medicated shampoo contains special ingredients that are very effective

in reducing dandruff or relieving other scalp conditions. Some
medicated shampoos must be prescribed by a physician. They can be
quite strong and could affect the color of color-treated or lightened hair.

3. Clarifying shampoo contains an active chelating agent that binds to

metals (such as iron and copper) and removes them from the hair well
as an equalizing agent that enriches hair, helps retain moisture, and
makes hair more manageable. Clarifying shampoo should be used when
a build-up is evident, after swimming, and prior to all chemical services.

6
4. Balancing shampoo is advisable for oily hair and scalp. This helps
wash away excess oiliness, while preventing the hair from drying out.

5. Color-enhancing shampoo is created by combining the surfactant

base with basic color pigment. It is similar to a temporary color rinse
because it is attracted to porous hair and result in only slight color
changes that are removed with plain shampooing. It is used to brighten
and add a slight hint of color and to eliminate unwanted color tones,
such as gold or brassiness and overly cool strands.

Guidelines in Selecting the Correct Shampoo

A shampoo must remove all dirt, oils, cosmetics, and skin debris
without adversely affecting either the scalp or hair, thus it should be selected
properly. Using the right shampoo for your client can spell a difference in the
overall outcome of your service. The following are the guidelines in selecting
the correct shampoo.

1. Know the product. Always read the labels and information carefully
so that you can make decisions about the use of various shampoos. A
thorough knowledge of the products will also help a cosmetologist in
recommending home-care items for purchase by the clients.

2. Analyze the condition of client’s hair and scalp. One of the

important skills of a cosmetologist is to be able to analyze the condition
of the client’s hair and scalp. This will help in selecting appropriate
shampoo for the client. Hair can usually be characterized as oily, dry,
normal, or chemically treated. The client might even have an oily scalp
with dry hair, possibly due to over processing.

3. Be aware of the previous hair treatment. Be aware of the hair that

has been chemically treated. Ask the client whether the hair has been
lightened, colored, permed or chemically relaxed. The hair that has
been abused using harsh shampoos, or damaged by improper care and
exposure to the elements such as wind, sun, cold, or heat, may require
a product that is less harsh and more conditioning than the hair that
has not been chemically treated.

Health and Safety Measures when Giving a Shampoo

It is important to observe health and safety precautions to prevent the
likelihood of injury to the clients, the operator himself or himself and everyone
in the salon. It is also a way of building relationship with the client as being
careful and organized can build trust. The following health and safety
measures that must be observed by a hairdresser are as follows:

7
1. Clean and disinfect tools, implements, and materials. When cleaning
and disinfecting, be able to follow the following steps:
a. Put on a pair of gloves while performing disinfection to prevent
possible contamination and to protect hands from the powerful
chemicals in the disinfectant solution.
b. Clean all tools and implements such as combs and brushes by
first rinsing them in warm running water, and then thoroughly
washing them with soap, a small nylon brush, and warm water.
c. Dry the items thoroughly with a clean fabric or disposable towel
or allow them to air dry on a clean towel.
d. Store disinfected implements in a clean, dry container or storage
until needed.
e. Remove gloves and thoroughly wash and dry hands.

2. Ensure the cleanliness of workstation. Disinfect the area including

the client’ chair at least 20 minutes before the first service. Use
approved disinfectant cleaner.

3. Collect all implements and products that are needed and bring to
the workstation.

4. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as laboratory

gown, gloves and masks.

5. Always sanitize hands before and after servicing the client.

6. Always check for the following hair conditions: a) dry, dehydrated

hair; b) thinning of the hair; c) excessive hair left in the sink trap
after shampooing; d) dry, tight scalp; e) oily scalp; f) abnormal flaking
on the scalp; g) open wounds or scalp irritations; h) scalp disorders
or diseases and; i) tick or lice infestation. A client with an infectious
disease should not be treated in the salon and should be referred to
a physician.

7. Be sure to read and follow the manufacturer’s directions on the use

of the product. Be informed regarding whether a shampoo is
required before using a particular chemical product such as hair
color.

8. Clean, disinfect and reorganize the workstation after each client.
