A REPORT ABOUT GROUP THREE IS PHYSICS PROJECT “NAPHTHA-BLOCKS”

Introduction
Group Three of Senior One T recently made a Physics Project called
Naphtha-blocks. Naphtha-blocks are wooden blocks that are soaked in a specific
scent for a given period and let out to dry with the aim of diffusing the scent
across the room.
Methods of data collection
Of the different sources of data collection, Group Three chose to use
discussion work and internet research. This is because they were the most time
saving, efficient and materials needed to conduct research were readily available.
Findings
It was discovered that naphthalene balls are dangerous to human health.
This is because naphthalene balls contain chemicals like naphthalene and para -
dichlorobenzene, both of which are dangerous to man. This is due to their effects
to human health which include, Headaches, Nausea, Eye and Nose irritation and
Coughing. While long term exposure causes conditions like hemolytic anemia.
It was also discovered that students are more likely to concentrate in areas
with an improved scent than areas with a terrible smell. This will improve the
overall performance o pupils in a class with an improved scent.
It was noted that diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of
high concentration to an area of low concentration. This is examined in our
project whereby the gaseous molecules of high concentration around the blocks
spread to areas of low concentration in the room.
Challenge faced
One challenge faced was delay in receiving our materials. This caused a
push back in our schedule as a group. We solved this problem by rushing in doing
our work and finishing on time.
 Another challenge faced was lack of time. This means that we did not have
enough time to properly carry out all the steps required. For example, we were
not able to properly soak the blocks in the scented oil for the desired amount of
time. Though, we were able to present a sample in time for presentations
Conclusion
In conclusion, “Naphtha-Blocks” are important because the promote a
refreshing scent in the school environment and promote the concentration levels
of students. This is without causing any effects like naphthalene balls do.
Recommendations
As Group Three, we recommend making Naphtha-Blocks with different
scents like mint, lavender and others.
We also recommend placing the Naphtha-Blocks in classrooms or around
the different dormitories to promote good scent.
