Problem Set # 1
2D FORCE SYSTEMS – RESULTANTS
Instructions:
1. Answer the problem set in a short bond paper using the Problem Set Format posted in our
Canvas Module.
2. Copy the problem and the figure before answering.
3. Write your solutions and answers neatly in two columns (upper left-down-upper right-down).
Avoid as many erasures as possible.
4. Show the necessary diagrams in your solution.
5. Box and round off final answers to two (2) decimal places with the correct units.
6. Every short-size bond paper should only have one problem. You may use more than one bond
paper if the solution to a problem does not fit.
7. Pass your assignment to the department anytime on September 8.
1. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its direction, measured clockwise from the
positive y-axis.
2. The guy cables AB and AC are attached to the top of the transmission tower. The tension in
cable AB is 8 kN. Determine the required tension T in cable AC such that the net effect of the
two cable tensions is a downward force at point A. Determine the magnitude R of this downward
force.
4. Three forces act on the bracket. Determine the magnitude and direction θ of F so that the
resultant force is directed along the positive x′ axis and has a magnitude of 8 kN.

5. If the resultant force acting on the bracket is required to be a minimum, determine the
magnitudes of F1 and the resultant force. Set Φ = 30°.
7. Determine the magnitude and direction, measured counterclockwise from the positive x-axis, of
the resultant force acting on the ring at O if FA = 750 N and θ = 45°.
