SM Entertainment, founded in 1995 by
Head Producer Lee Soo Man, is the first
company in the industry to introduce
systematic casting, training, producing,
and management systems, and it has
been discovering unique content by
pinpointing demands for music and
cultural trends. Is a Korean company
dedicated to the entertainment business.
The company primarily operates its
business through three segments. The
entertainment segment is engaged in
businesses such as album and sound font
production, broadcast and commercial
appearances, and celebrity management
services. The advertising segment is
dedicated to the advertising agency and
production.

After graduating from Seoul National
University and pursuing his own career as
a singer, Lee Soo Man surveyed several
teenagers about what they wanted to see
in music groups; that’s when he started
boy group H.O.T., and girl group S.E.S.
Both groups became successful during the
1990s. Soon after, Lee Soo Man created
another boy group, which was named
Shinhwa; the group achieved the same
popularity and success as the previous
groupsHowever, problems began to
appear in SM Entertainment after the
disintegration of H.O.T.. Some financial
issues are supposed to be the problem, but
the true reasons have never been officially
revealed, while S.E.S. disbanded a year
after H.O.T. It did and a year later in 2003,
SM Entertainment would also see
Shinhwa’s departure, though the group
would turn in a new direction rather than
break up and continue their success
outside of SM Entertainment
In the years that followed, some of their
newer companies, such as Isak N Jiyeon
and Black Beat, were unable to achieve
the same popularity that the early SM
artists managed to achieve.
The agency later discovered new hits like:
BoA and DBSK. In addition to marketing to
domestic audiences, the two artists have
aggressively promoted themselves in
Japan. As part of the recent venture (blue
ocean strategy) to export Korean talent to
large overseas music markets.
