Simultaneous interpretation, also known as simultaneous translation, is a method of
interpreting where the interpreter provides real-time translation of spoken language into another
language. All of the skills mentioned under consecutive interpreting apply to simultaneous. The three
main actions are also essentially the same:

1. listen actively (understand)

2. analyses (structure the message)
3. reproduce (communicate)

The difference with consecutive interpreting is that in simultaneous interpreting all of these things need
to happen at the same time (or simultaneously).

In general, there are two types of simultaneous interpretation: consecutive and conference.
Consecutive interpretation is where the interpreter waits until a speaker has finished their sentence or
paragraph before they interpret.

Who Invented Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation was developed and refined by a team of individuals over several
decades. The roots of simultaneous interpretation can be traced back to the early 20th century,
particularly to the International Labor Organization (ILO) conferences held in the 1920s. The need for a
more efficient method of interpretation arose as the number of languages used in these international
conferences increased.
