Professional Interpreting in

Education
Putu Eka Kharisma Dewi//20110201001
Though interpreting became more widespread in the post-war period, with the creation of simultaneous
interpreting to solve communication problems during the Nuremberg Trials, interpreting has actually
existed since Ancient Egypt.
There are also records of interpreters in Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, and the work of
interpreters has not changed much throughout the centuries, even during the Middle Ages and the Age of
Discovery. This situation continued until the Paris Peace Conferences in 1919, when politicians began to
speak in languages other than French, the official language of diplomacy. This cleared the way for
multilingualism.
The growing importance of good business relations meant that gestures were no longer enough, and so
the interpreter made their first appearance.
Professional Interpreting with Education has a very important
relationship in shaping the quality of a good translator's competence.
translation competence which is the knowledge and ability of a
translator to produce translations of good quality. One of the
translation competencies includes the educational background
and/or translation training that the translator has taken. because
education is very important to produce quality translators
What is Interpreter?
• Interpretation is the oral transposition of an
orally delivered message at a conference or
a meeting from a source language into a
target language, performed in the presence
of the participants.” ( Weber 1984)

• Interpretation refers to oral communication

situations in which one person speaks in the
source language, an interpreter processes
this inputs and produces output in a second
language , and a third person listens to the
source version. ( Brislin, 1976:1)
Types of interpretation

1. Simultaneous Interpreter

2. Consecutive Interpreter

3.Whispered Interpretation

4.Liaison Interpretation
Simultaneous interpreters are interpreters who work by translating messages in
the source language into the target language directly or on the spot. The system
works is that when the speaker conveys a sentence or more, a simultaneous
interpreter immediately translates or interprets the message simultaneously with
the speaker.
Consecutive interpreter is a translator whose work process alternates with the
speaker. That is, the speaker will speak first and then pause for the translator to
translate the message. In contrast to a simultaneous interpreter who requires a
tool to assist his interpretation, a consecutive interpreter does not need a tool for
the translation process.
Chuchotage interpretation (from French for 'to whisper'), whispered
interpretation is a less commonly used type of interpretation than simultaneous
and sequential interpretation. Its working principle; translator who works with
one or perhaps two listeners in a room. When the speaker speaks, the interpreter
translates only for that listener.
A liaison interpretation is an interpreter who is involved to act as a translator
between two people. The liaison interpreter translates for each in turn, allowing
them to communicate freely and relatively fluently. Linking interpretation is a
form of sequential interpretation.
