Young Modulus

BY ; Roann L. Hernandez
What is Young Modulus?
• in solid mechanics, Young's modulus (also known as the modulus of elasticity or
elastic modulus) is a measure of the stiffness of a given material. It is defined as
the limit for small strains of the rate of change of stress with strain. This can be
experimentally determined from the slope of a stress-strain curve created during
tensile tests conducted on a sample of the material. Young's modulus is named
after Thomas Young the English physicist, physician, and Egyptologist
• The Young's modulus allows the behavior of a material under load to be
calculated. For instance, it can be used to predict the amount a wire will extend
under tension, or to predict the load at which a thin column will buckle under
compression. Some calculations also require the use of other material properties,
such as the shear modulus, density, or Poisson's ratio. Young's modulus - Linear vs
non-linear. For many materials, Young's modulus is a constant over a range of
strains. Such materials are called ..
Calculation
• The modulus of elasticity, λ, can be calculated by dividing the stress by the strain,
i.e. where (in SI units) λ is the modulus of elasticity, measured in pascals F is the
force, measured in newtons A is the cross-sectional area through which the force is
applied, measured in square metres x is the extension, measured in metres l is the
natural length, measured in metres < ...
• Just as what have been stated in the Hooke’s Law where the distorting force F is
directly proportional to the deformation Y stress is directly proportional to strain
thus the equation stress
K (constant)= --------
strain
The constant K is called Young’s Modulus This gives the formula.

A stretched rubber band does not return
immediately to its original shape and size when the
deforming force is remove. This condition is called
ELASTIG LAG or HYSTERESIS (LAGGING BEHIND) . In
this case the stress ad the strain do not vary
proportionaly Hence, Young Modulus for rubber is
not constant.
Sample problem:
• A steel rod 5 m long with a cross sectional area of 0.5 cm
squared supports a load of 2.42 x102 N, How much the rod
stretched ?
Given; 1m2
Y steel= 20x1010 N/m2 A=0.5cm2x------=5x10-3m2
102 cm2
Where;
F= 2.42 x102 N Find; L
A= 0.5 cm squared
L= 5m
Solution
F/A F.L
Y=------ L =------
L/L Y.A

(2.42 x102 )(5)

L =--------------------=1.21x10-6m
(20x1010 )(5x10-3)
