What This Module is About

This Alternative Instructional Resource -Learning Material in Grade 10


English is specially designed to provide you the most essential learning
competencies that will develop your knowledge, skills, attitudes and values.
This resource provides you significant tasks and authentic learning
experience that are both relevant to your life. It will deepen your understanding on
how to enrich, enhance and lead a meaningful life. Activities presented are to
develop your essential life skills while overcoming personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling during this time of pandemic.

Voucher program for SHS in peril due to DepEd budget


cuts
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday
admitted that it is unsure whether it could finance the payout under its senior
high school voucher program for the first semester of school year 2021 to 2022
due to budget reduction.
During the senate hearing on the agency’s proposed 2021 budget, Sen.
Sherwin Gatchallan asked about DepEd’s capability to finance its voucher program,
which provides an average of P18,000 to 1.3 million students.
The voucher program was allocated P13 billion under the National
Expenditure Program after the Department of Budget and Management (DBM)
imposed the downsizing of the budget to make way for the free tertiary education,
Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla said.
“Ang simple computation ko, with P13 billion, we can only finance half of
the 1.3 million senior high school students,” said Gatchallan, chairman of
the Senate committee on basic education, arts, and culture.
“So my simple question is, with P13 billion, we know it is not enough. What
is going to happen with that amount of money? Are we going to cut in half
the senior high school voucher program?” he asked.
USec.Jess Mateo,head of DepEd’s voucher program said the P13 billion is
only enough to fund the voucher program beneficiaries’ second semester of the
current school year.
“‘Yung P13 billion, P11 billion of that will be enough to pay the second
semester of this school year 2020 to 2021. So which means only P2 billion
is left for the first semester [of next year],” Mateo said.
“In other words, ‘yung school year 2021 to 2022 first semester, hindi pa siya
sigurado?” Gatchalian asked, to which Mateo answered in the affirmative.
DepEd’s voucher program aims to suffice the cost of schooling for qualified
senior high school students.

your outlooks in life. You will not only store new things learned, but to talk,
understand and make use of these to interact with people around you. Outright
information could reach you by simply perusing a book, clicking on text or
messages in your Facebook account. Being informed, involves understanding a
context. Being able to look ahead and being able to make a decision, about recent
developments and occurrences are beyond your control and responsibility.

Lesson 1:
Identifying the different sources of Information
Getting information from different sources is indeed essential in our daily life. It
offers different interpretations and essential aspect of studying and learning. What
news, how to access and how to use it, is primarily a need in that sense.
Scrutinizing and checking their content is indeed relevant and must be included in
this process for these rely your work and perspective. It is important to understand
that all information will have a certain degree of validity. Otherwise your study can
be easily forged or altered especially on the internet where anybody can publish
anything. It is therefore necessary to use judgement when deciding which
documents to use in the context of your study.
In this lesson you will learn and discover various sources of information needed in
your everyday life. You will accomplished diverse tasks that will lead you to better
understanding and assist your home study.

Discover

Information are facts provided or learned from something or someone. It can


be found anywhere. Therefore it is a need for you to know and understand the Five
W’s and 1H-who, what, when, where, why and how. In these sense you have to get
inside and out, to look the whole scenario of the story in order for you to get into
the right track.
Sources of Information are classified as Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.
1. Primary source - tells you about an event and is from the time of that event. It
happens when it is given. They are originals/authentic and had
not been subjected to evaluation or assessment. Examples:
reports of discoveries, speeches, photographs/pictures, letters,
diaries, firsthand account of what happened etc.
2. Secondary source - tells you about an event but is from a time after the event.
It usually talks about primary sources. It provides information,
discussion and or interpretation of the evidence. The information
are written by authors who do not personally witnessed the event
or action. Examples: textbooks, Journals/magazines that
portray info for eyewitnesses, encyclopedia, commentary critics,
evaluation, reviews of artwork, biographies etc.
3. Tertiary source- serves as the collection of primary and secondary sources.
Examples: Indexes – provide citations that fully identify a work
with information such as author, titles of a book, article,
and/or journal, publisher and publication date, volume and
issue number and page numbers.
Abstracts – summarize the primary or secondary sources, Databases – are
online indexes that usually include abstracts for each primary or secondary
resource, and may also include a digital copy of the resource. Bibliography,
Directories, Almanac, Dictionary etc.
Note: Some sources of information can also be classified both as Primary and
Secondary. These can be primary source when interview and eye witness account
happen soon after an event. Or these can be secondary source if the articles are
published much later than the event, critique and analyze it. Examples: books,
newspaper, scholarly journals and etc.

The type of information you need will change depending on the question you are

information to help you evaluate your sources.
1. Accuracy - information is correct, every definite word, expression on
sentences or in details must be precise and based on true facts.
2. Completeness - understand the bigger picture of a story. The information
should provide the needed details and which facts covers the WH Questions.

3. Timeliness - It is up to date or happened in current situation or event. The
quality of being done or occurring at a favorable or useful time is the essence of
the news because of the changes which may occur in the transitory period.
4. Consistency - the information is orderly treated and polished to make it
accurate and useful.
5. Relevance - the information should meet the demands or targets of the
readers.

you must learn to discover and evaluate how it was done basing on
standards and characteristics.

Directions: Read and analyze the following news updates about the cases of
corona virus in our country. Then answer the questions that follow on
a separate sheet of paper.
PH virus tally nears 300,000

September 25, 2020- Department of Health (DOH), reported an additional


2,180 COVID-19 infections, bringing the national tally to 296,755.

Of the new cases submitted by 122 of the 131 accredited laboratories, Metro
Manila accounted for most of the new cases at 802, followed by Laguna (292),
Batangas (152), Cavite (144), and Negros Occidental (87). DOH said that 36 more
patients succumbed to the severe respiratory disease, raising the death toll to 5,127
while 580 more recovered, bringing the total number of COVID-19 survivors to
231,928.

The country now has 59,700 active cases, of which 86.6 percent are mild, 9.2
percent asymptomatic, 1.3 percent severe, and 2.9 percent critical. Majority of the
new cases, or 1,825, fell ill between Sept. 11 and Sept. 24.

Of the newly reported fatalities, 23 died this month, seven in August, two each
in July and June, and one each in May and April. Fifteen of the fatalities were from
Metro Manila, seven each from Western Visayas and Central Visayas, two from
Calabarzon, and one each from Ilocos, Central Luzon, Zamboanga, Soccsksargen,
and among overseas workers. DOH also reported that as of September 23, about 48
percent of intensive care beds for COVID-19 patients were occupied, while 24
percent of mechanical ventilators were in use.

Lesson 2: Determining the content & structure
of News Reports as medium of instruction.
Using information from news reports is important since it keeps us
to be informed about events and it keeps us involved in the community. But you
need to understand its content because it may cause conflict of interest on the way

news is reported. That’s why news reports have a certain structure that you need
to follow to ensure you can find the most important information fast.
In this lesson you will use information from news reports. You will
accomplish diverse tasks in completing news report plans, with code facts using
contents to order and separate information.
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
a. use information from news reports that can be used in everyday life;
b. Promote the interest and sense of responsibility of the learners in validating
the quality of information needed in academic and personal use by writing news
c. develop the abilities to organize information and construct it into a text.
Now, recall your favorite news reporter or anchor. How did he/she craft the
content of his/her report? Is the information reliable and/or credible?

Imagine that you are a reporter. As a reporter, you should aim to write
news reports that are truthful, fair, balanced and interesting. How will you begin

1. News Reports begin with a catchy HEADLINE. Headline is the heading at the
top of an article or page in a newspaper or magazine.

2. Lead Paragraph informs the reader of the most important angles of the story.
Tell the best bits. Focus on the part that is likely to be of most interest to your
readers. The LEAD PARAGRAPH is often the only part of the story that people

by the editor if the space is no longer enough for the text.
6. Byline - writer of the story
Hints:
* News report-covers the most important from the least important details like an
Inverted pyramid structure.
* Your News report should be easy to understand that even grade learners would
understand.
*Keep it short and simple.
* Be fair – include both sides of the story. Don’t let your opinion get in the way you
report the facts. Stick only to facts. Opinions should be attributed to a named
source.

Activity 3.1 Read and analyze the motivational speech below. After
which, write your answers to the questions that follow on a clean sheet of

It was almost seven months when the whole world was shocked and stricken
by the dreadful COVID 19 pandemic. Everything has changed for days, weeks and
months. Everyone is alarmed and fearful that anytime he/she would be the next
victim of the life-threatening virus.
Numerous cases are recorded daily in which based on latest tally (Sept 26,
2020) the country has a total cases of 302,895; with 233 thousand recoveries and

5,372 deaths. For worldwide, 32.7 million are the total cases; 22.6 million
recovered; and 933 thousand deaths.
See no one else is safe from this disease; not even doctors, experts or front
liners who are taking hardest times and efforts to save lives are exempted. Many
times that the government, health specialists are pronouncing never-ending
reminders to all walks of life, to take preventive measures or follow protocol health
standards to protect us from the virus, but that call until now is far from reality
whom some only ignore and continue their ways as they wanted to.
Getting ourselves into new normal really makes big difference. Gone are the
days where we could spend any time with our friends, family and the community
whatever happenings would that be. Our activities are controlled by the virus,
aimed to touch our lives in unexpected times and places.
Amid this crises, did you ever ask yourself why do these things happen?
How you see things around, how you respond the call, would bounce back unto
you. But remember, you are not alone. You can’t live the way you wanted to coz
you have to consider how you affect others life. Is this possible? Surely it is. Now is

Provision of access to basic education has always been a key priority of our

I could tell you many things about radium and radioactivity and it would
take a long time. But as we cannot do that, I shall only give you a short account of
my early work about radium.
