the independent variable of this experiment?
a. scientist b. incubator c. temperature d. gender of the ostrich

Ask the students to unlock the following words by arranging the letters
provided.
1. experiment; 2. hypothesis; 3. problem; 4. scientific method

B. ENGAGE The students will be asked with these questions:

1. How do you deal with your daily problems? Thinking of a possible

solution to every problem being encountered.

2. How were you able to identify the solution to the problem? Using the
previous experiences or asking my family or friends for an advice?

3. With regard to scientists, how do they deal with problems in their field?
They would think logically and critically such that they would follow certain
steps in solving their problem(s).

C. EXPLORE
The teacher will divide the class into ten groups. Each group will arrange in

order the series of steps involved in a Scientific Method.

1st Step: To make OBSERVATIONS. It is the process of obtaining

information using your senses? Let’s say you noticed that ice melted fast in
water.

2nd Step: To come up with a QUESTION. Your observation should lead to

some sort of questions. Example: Does ice melt faster in different liquids?
Curiosity on what happens to the ice in liquids can be satisfied through a
simple science experiment using the scientific method.

3rd Step: To DEVELOP A HYPOTHESIS OR PREDICTION . You have

made your observations and you have your questions. Now you need to
predict what you think will happen next, will the ice melt faster in juice
than it will in water?

4th Step: CONDUCT AN EXPERIMENT OR TEST THE HYPOTHESIS.

You have a prediction that ice will melt faster in juice than in water, and now
you must test your hypothesis or educated guess. You set up an experiment
with a glass of juice, a glass of water and an ice cube for each.

5th Step: To RECORD AND ANALYZE THE RESULTS. You make sure to
record what is happening as well as the results. Note changes at specific time
intervals or after one set time interval. When each ice cube is completely
melted, add drawings if you wish at the end results. Was your prediction
accurate? If it is not accurate, state the reason/s.

6th Step: To DRAW CONCLUSIONS This is the opportunity to talk about

your hypothesis, your experiment, your results, and your conclusion which is
the final answer to your problem or experiment.

D. EXPLAIN Let each group to show their answers and discuss the correct order of steps in
a Scientific Method.

Show to the class the diagram below.

1st Step: To make OBSERVATIONS.

2nd Step: To come up with a QUESTION.

3rd Step: To DEVELOP A HYPOTHESIS OR

PREDICTION

4th Step: CONDUCT AN EXPERIMENT OR TEST

THE HYPOTHESIS.
5th Step: To RECORD AND ANALYZE THE
RESULTS.
6th Step: To DRAW CONCLUSIONS

For the 3rd Step: To DEVELOP A HYPOTHESIS OR PREDICTION.

A hypothesis is not simply a guess! A hypothesis is an educated guess or

tentative answer to a problem. The student thinks that ice will melt faster in
juice than it will in water. Maybe he just wants to get a drink of juice out of it.

Example:

1. What happens to the growth of mongo seeds if table salt was added to the
soil?

HYPOTHESIS: If the amount of salt added to the soil increases, then the
growth of mongo seeds decreases.

2. Tomato seeds may grow faster in colder temperature.

HYPOTHESIS: If tomato seeds were planted in colder temperature, then the

seeds will grow at a faster rate.

Let the students try the following:

1. What effect does temperature have on the dissolution rate of sugar in

water?

Hypothesis:
_____________________________________________________

2. Eating chocolates may cause pimples.

Hypothesis:
_____________________________________________________

For the 4th Step: CONDUCT AN EXPERIMENT OR TEST THE

HYPOTHESIS.
E. ELABORATE When you design an experiment, you are controlling and measuring variables.
The things that are changing in an experiment are called variables.

There are three (3) types of variables in an experiment.

1. The controlled or constant variable (cannot changed) - the must stay the
same throughout the experiment. Ex. Same temperature, same person
drinking,or same type.
2. Independent variable - can stand, changed, controlled or the what we are
changing for each experiment. Example: Three different soda brands (Mt.
Dew, Pepsi, or Coke)
3. Dependent variable (one that is tested and measured) - what are we
measuring (height, speed, distant, time)

Let students come up their own explanation about what a Scientific method
is, based from the series of its steps provided.

What is Scientific method?

- Scientific method refers to a set of procedures that scientists follow in order

to solve a problem or to gain knowledge around the world.

- The scientific method is a tool used by scientists to answer questions about

the world. It follows step-by-step procedures which are logical and
sequential. This is often conducted in scientific investigations which seek to
find out the truth regarding a certain phenomenon.
F. EXTEND
- Let the student
complete the chart
shown.

- Let students answer the following exercise.

Directions: Identify which step in the Scientific Method is described in each
statement. Write only the letter of your choice.

A. To make OBSERVATIONS.

B. To DEVELOP A HYPOTHESIS OR PREDICTION

C. CONDUCT AN EXPERIMENT OR TEST THE HYPOTHESIS.
