Situation: Amanda is a 37 year old who has had a esophageal surgery for carcinoma. She is receiving 250 ml of liquid nutrition
over a 15 minute period every 4 hours through a nasogastric tube.
1. Amanda tells the nurse that she is experiencing diarrhea. The nurse suspects that the client is suffering from dumping
syndrome:
a. What is a dumping syndrome? (1pt)
 Dumping syndrome is a group of symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea and feeling light-headed or tired after a meal that are
caused by rapid gastric emptying. 

b. What may cause the dumping syndrome? (1pt)

 Rapid gastric emptying, a condition in which food moves too quickly from your stomach to your duodenum which causes
dumping syndrome.

c. What are the manifestations of dumping syndrome? Give at least 3 symptoms (3pts)
 Diarrhea
 Bloated Feeling
 Nausea

Situation: Andrew, a 15 year old is admitted at the hospital with a possible diagnosis of appendicitis. He had been symptomatic
for several days before admission:
1. What is the possible cause of appendicitis? (1pts)

 Hardened stool or growths that can block the opening inside the appendix
 Enlarged tissue in the wall of your appendix, caused by infection in the digestive tract or somewhere else in your body
 Inflammation/Infection
 Foreign Bodies

2. What are the positive indicators of appendicitis? Give at least 3 (1pts)

 Rebound Tenderness

3. What is rebound tenderness? (1 pt)

 Rebound tenderness, also known as Blumberg’s sign, refers to the presence of pain when pressure is removed from the
abdomen, rather than when applied. 

4. What is the common site where pain is elicited upon palpation? (1pt)

 McBurney’s point that refers to the point on the lower right quadrant of the abdomen at which tenderness is maximal in cases
of acute appendicitis.

5. What is the major complication of Appendicitis? (1 pt)

 The main problem with appendicitis is the risk of a burst appendix. This may happen if the appendix is not removed quickly. A
burst appendix can lead to infection in the belly, called peritonitis. Peritonitis can be very serious and can even cause death if
not treated right away.

6. When does perforation usually occurs? (1pt)


 Gastrointestinal perforation (GP) occurs when a hole forms all the way through the stomach, large bowel, or small intestine. 

Situation: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of pathologic conditions which often leads to mortality of the individual.
