Learning is a process which touches on almost every aspect of human life.

Notably, it is through learning that the experiences of the past are passed on to the
younger generation by parents as well as educators. I definitely agree on what they
stand that it is impossible to get knowledge without learning. However, there are
several factors that would affect the learning of a kid. As according to Richlin in his
book, “Learning does not occur in a vacuum.” Such environment, it plays a vital role
as far as the learning is concerned, moreover in developing a child. The environment
that a child is placed in while while growing up will affect their social, emotional,
cognitive developing, and even learning a language. In my case, I was born and
brought up in a remote, Barangay Gadongan, Ganassi. Belonging to lower middle-
class subsistence farming family, pursuing education was a big thing to imagine.
Thankfully, our parents believed that education is their ultimate dream to their
children since they, themselves were deprived from education. Before going to
school, I completely had no idea of how English language works. Unlike other kids,
we don’t have television, cellphone, computer, and even a radio to connect with.
At an age of 3 to 4, I was not able to memorize the English alphabet because no
one taught me. My sister was an elementary pupil, however teaching us was not her
priority back then but earning money as she loves to be independent. I was fortunate
to start my education in our own village at Danugan Central Elementary School at an
age of four. That was the time the alphabets were properly introduced to me. Though
the education I had there was not that standard, teachers are doing great in molding
the students. Though, during my abecedarian years, learning the English language is
just a subject, I began learning English with the letters in order in kindergarten.
English was instructed extensively but not seriously from kindergarten to elementary
level as a mandatory subject, resulting in poor results. Learning a single subject was
hard, not to tell the English subject itself was a challenge. I could still remember that at
school, teaching or learning English language essentially focused on teaching grammar
rules, sentence structure rule with special emphasis on prescriptive grammar and
vocabulary. I learned the language defectively, my teacher was not perfect in teaching
us but I learned a lot from her. What I can’t really forget about her was that she taught
us proper pronunciation of words. I was able to compose simple essays since it was
our task every week. When you learn to speak the language back then you were treated
differently like a genius, like you are inferior to the others since the speakers of the
said language was distinct in the area. This provided me motivation during those ages
to start learning English properly but as I grow up exploring the said language, my
reasons becomes deeper and meaningful. I am loving the language more than as a
language but as a connection.
