ASSIGNMENT 4- PROBLEM SOLVING
TOPICS: FORCE AND LAWS OF MOTION
2. A ball is falling from the top of the tower of height 5cm. How much momentum does
it transfer to the floor if its mass is 500g?(g= 10m/s) (A: 5kgm/s)
3. A car weighing 1500kg moving with a velocity of 60km/h retards uniformly to rest in
20s. Find the change in momentum that takes place in 1s? (A: 1250kgm/s)
4. The change in momentum of a body in 0.01s is 10kgm/s. Find the force acting on the
body? (A: 1000N)
6. A motorcycle is moving with a velocity of 90km/h and it takes 5 seconds to stop after
the brakes are applied. Calculate the force exerted by the brakes on the motorcycle
if its mass along with the rider is 200kg. (A: -100N)
7. Calculate the force required to impart a car a velocity 0f 30m/s in 10seconds. The
mass of the car is 1500kg. (A: 4500N)
8. What is the momentum of a man of mass 75kg when he walks with a velocity of
2m/s? (A:150kgm/s)
(A: -4 x 10-4N)

11. Two persons manage to push a motorcar of mass 1200kg at a uniform velocity along
a level road. The same motorcar can be pushed by three persons to produce an
acceleration of 0.2m/s2. With what force does each person push the motorcar?
(Assume the muscular effort of all is same) (A: 240N)
12. A motorcar of mass 1200kg is moving along a straight line with a uniform velocity of
90km/h. Its velocity is slowed down to 18km/h in 4s by an unbalanced external
force. Calculate the acceleration and change in momentum. Also calculate the
magnitude of force required. (A: a= -5m/s2 ; -24000kgm/s ; 6000N)
13. Prove that Newton’s first law of motion is a special case of Newton’s second law of
motion.
14. State the law of conservation of linear momentum.
15. The units : kgm/s and Ns, share the same physical quantity. Name the physical
quantity?
