 Introduction

"The Canterville Ghost" is a short story by Oscar Wilde, first published in 1887.
The story tells the tale of Sir Simon de Canterville's ghost, who has been haunting
the Canterville family for centuries. One day, an American family moves into
Canterville Chase and begins to experience supernatural encounters with the ghost.
The family tries to ignore the ghost, triggering a series of events that challenge the
ghost's ability to scare them.
 Synthesis

The ghost is Sir Simon de Canterville, a former resident of the house who murdered
his wife and was subsequently cursed to haunt the house until a descendant of his
performs a brave deed. The Otis family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Otis, their eldest
son Washington, their daughter Virginia, and their twin boys.

The story begins with the Otis family moving into Canterville Chase and being
warned by the housekeeper, Mrs. Umney, about the ghost. However, the family is
unafraid and even offers the ghost lubricant to oil his chains so he can move more
quietly. The ghost is infuriated by their lack of fear and attempts to scare them with
various tricks, such as appearing as a headless ghost, a bloody hand on the wall,
and a ghostly green giant.

The family responds to each of the ghost's attempts with practical jokes and
modern technology, such as a can of oil to silence his chains, a pillow to muffle his
groans, and a ghost-proof lubricator for his door hinges. However, the ghost's
attempts to scare them continue, and he eventually resorts to appearing as a
fearsome specter with a sheet and a thundering voice.

Despite his efforts, the Otis family remains unimpressed and even Virginia, the
daughter, offers the ghost sympathy and friendship. She learns of his tragic
backstory and vows to help him achieve peace by performing the brave deed that
will release him from his curse.

The story ends with Virginia performing the brave deed by praying for the ghost's
soul, which allows him to finally rest in peace. The Otis family leaves Canterville
Chase, and the ghost is never seen again.
Overall, "The Canterville Ghost" is a humorous and satirical take on the traditional
ghost story, in which the ghost is ultimately defeated by modern technology and the
power of love and compassion.
 Conclusion

The story mocks the idea that a ghost can be capable of scaring someone and shows
how determination and courage can overcome any fear. Additionally, the story also
explores themes such as compassion, empathy and redemption through the
relationship between Virginia and the ghost.
