1 Introduction
Too high temperature in control cabinets may cause PLC modules to fail. Most of the
components installed in the control cabinet have an operating range between +5 and
+55C°. Failure of components such as analogue input/output plc modules, may cause
unwanted control system behaviour.
2 Description
Control cabinets must always be installed according to the installation planning
instructions (IPI), with special attention on following conditions.
Ambient conditions
Operation temperature: +5 to +55°C
Humidity: Up to 100% RH (Non condensing)
Vibrations: Frequency range 2-100 Hz, Amplitude +/- 1,6 mm below 13,2Hz,
Acceleration amplitude: 0,7g above 13,2 Hz
Mechanical installation
The following rules apply:
1. When mechanical mounting is prepared, always make sure that the foundation does
not generate amplification of vibrations due to the mass/damping relation.
2. Equipment should not be mounted directly on rotating machinery.
3. Cabinets must be placed according to installation drawings.
Leakage
Avoid locations that may cause damage to the equipment from leakage of fluids.
Heat
Prevent the equipment from heat, directly, or by radiation.
Ventilation
The equipment should be installed in such a way that free circulation of clean air
around the units (cabinets) is maintained.

3 Solution
If the general temperature level inside the control cabinets for some reason exceeds
the recommended operating range, additional cooling is required.
One option is to install a cooling fan with inlet filter, and an outlet-filter in the cabinet for
additional cooling.
NOTE:
This solution is not a requirement, and normally not necessary if all the precautions
mentioned in the IPI are followed. Installing a fan will only be a solution if ambient
temperature is within acceptable limits.
4 Recommendation
The fan should run continuously to provide sufficient cooling and air flow around the
components. Contact Wärtsilä for advice and for updating of internal wiring diagram. It
is recommended that the installation be carried out by a Wärtsilä service engineer.
Install the fan inside the cabinet. As standard, the direction of airflow blows into the
cabinet from the outside. Fan unit contains a drip proof grill, and filtrates the air blown
into the cabinet.
The inlet and outlet filter must be checked regularly in accordance to the level of dust
exposure. Replace filter when necessary, recommended at the latest after 2,000
operating hours.
