BIOLOGY
(SECONDARY)
(Living Systems)
Unit Statement: Biological systems have a hierarchical structure in which each component is
dependent on others in order for the biosphere to support life. This unit aims to demonstrate
the dynamic nature of a system, from something as small as a cell, up to an ecosystem.
Structure and function of individual parts of a system play a role in the structure and function
of the entire system. Homeostasis is maintained as the parts of the system function as the
structure is designed. Students will use the Science Practices that are discussed in the Course
Outcomes throughout the unit. The connection between Biology and the Engineering Design
Process is introduced in this unit.
2. TSW describe properties of systems (inputs and outputs) and system models to
determine whether it is an open or closed system. (p. 4-6)

Create a model / diagram that explains your answer to the above question.
o Create a model / diagram (A4 size) on any online creation tool software (e.g.
Canva).
o Save your model as a pdf document and rename as

o Submit both this document (Activity 1) and your diagram on the Assignment
tab as two separate documents.
o Please include your group member names on your Activity 2 submission.

To receive a ‘B’, the student must show ‘B’ level mastery on ALL Essential Outcomes
(TSWs). To receive an ‘A’, the student must show ‘A’ level mastery on the majority of the
‘A’ level TSWs plus ‘B’ level mastery on all TSWs.
