Biology – E01: TSW 1.1.

BIOLOGY
(SECONDARY)

ESSENTIAL UNIT 1 (E01)

(Living Systems)
(July 2018)

Unit Statement: Biological systems have a hierarchical structure in which each component is
dependent on others in order for the biosphere to support life. This unit aims to demonstrate
the dynamic nature of a system, from something as small as a cell, up to an ecosystem.
Structure and function of individual parts of a system play a role in the structure and function
of the entire system. Homeostasis is maintained as the parts of the system function as the
structure is designed. Students will use the Science Practices that are discussed in the Course
Outcomes throughout the unit. The connection between Biology and the Engineering Design
Process is introduced in this unit.

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

1. The Student Will explain the hierarchical structure of biological organization and
describe how these components work together to make up one system. (p. 7-11)

Due date: 8 September 2023

Please answer the following questions.

1.1. Name and Surname

1.2. Period

1.3. What is a multicellular organism?

1.4. What is the difference between a cell and a tissue?

1.5. Describe the relationship between an organ system and an organism, according to the
levels of organization.

1.6. Provide one illustration (picture) that you find represents the levels of organization the
best. Please paste the picture below and include its citations.

1.7. Provide one video from YouTube that you find explains how these different systems
work together. Please include a screenshot of the You Tube video and a link.
