Description:

Some operators reported a high removal rate of Thales RMPs (P/N C12848*) due to LCD Display failures where
some segments were missing on the ACTIVE and STBY/CRS displays.

Investigations showed that ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) tracks supplying the display segment were eroded until they
no longer provide conductivity, inducing thus the loss of the segment.

Chemical tests were carried out and showed that the displays failures were caused by the presence of chlorine
on ITO tracks. The results of the chemical analysis revealed an abnormal chlorine ratio on defective ITO tracks,
whereas there was no trace of chlorine on healthy ITO tracks.

The tests showed that the application on the unit of a product in which there are chlorine-based chemical
agents, coupled with a regular electric solicitation, creates a phenomenon of electro erosion, degrading thus the
display.

Solution / Recommendation:

 General recommendations are given in ISI 12.00.00008 while disinfecting flight deck equipment
(electronics, screens, etc.):
 Clean and disinfect the flight deck at an appropriate frequency to accommodate safe operations
for the crew. The frequency should account for the operation of the aircraft and the potential
exposure of an infected person.
 Only Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) 70° solution is allowed as a cleaner/disinfectant for the flight deck
touch surfaces & electronics.
 Clean dirt and debris from surfaces before disinfecting to maximize effectiveness of disinfection.
 Apply IPA with wetted cotton wading or sterilized gaze (as per AMM) and use limited bottle sizes
on board to minimize the risk of spilling the disinfectant solution. Do not spray IPA directly on the
flight deck. Do not allow the liquid to pool or drip into the equipment.

 Regarding the RMPs more particularly, it is recommended in the VSIL THAV/SIL-1436 to use Isopropyl
Alcohol to clean RMPs. It is also recommended turning off the RMPs before disinfecting with IPA and
then waiting 15 minutes before turning the RMPs back on. Please refer to VSIL THAV/SIL-1436 for more
details regarding the cleaning procedures.

 In case of using a chlorine-based disinfectant, Thales recommends the following (of course if operational
constraints allow) before applying chlorine-based disinfectant:

 Power off the RMPs

 Clean the RMPs
 Wait one hour minimum before powering on RMP.

 It is not recommended to use the hand disinfectant wipes and sanitizers to clean the RMPs.
