5S
The 5S method is a system for organizing the workplace, incorporating a set of five Japanese
terms: seiri, seiton, seisō, seiketsu, and shitsuke. These words if translated in English will be
'sort', ‘set in order’, ‘shine’, ‘standardize’, and ‘sustain’. The 5S method applies standard
housekeeping practices in the workplace. it helps improve efficiency by eliminating waste,
improving flow and reducing the number of processes where possible. The steps of 5s. SORT,
this means segregation. Dirt, dust, rubbish, and all unwanted wastes or material should be
collected and segregated first. The goal of the Sort step is to eliminate clutter and clear up space
by removing things that don't belong in the area. This allows for a workflow free from
distraction. SET IN ORDER, there should be an effective arrangement of safe disposal of
segregated wastes. This also includes preventive ‘arrangements such as local exhaust ventilation,
dust collectors, vacuum cleaners, guards, covers, and devices to reduce noise, vibration, leakage,
spillage, etc. Seiton is the second step of the 5S method. It means "to set in order" or to put
everything into its proper place. You place things in such a way that they can be easily reached
whenever they are needed. SHINE, the main activity of good housekeeping is cleaning. It
includes cleaning of floors, walls, ceiling, sanitary and welfare facilities, parts of plant and
machinery, PPE and other equipment, tools, lighting fixtures, lamps, tubes, etc. While the first
and second steps cleared up space and arranged the area for efficiency, this step attacks the dirt
and grime that inevitably builds up underneath the clutter, and works to keep it from coming
back. Seiso is the third step of the 5S method. It means "to make everything shiny clean".
STANDARDIZE, this suggests compliance with statutory provisions and national or
international standards for safety, quality, cleanliness, and environment. Standardization ensures
that the most efficient work practices are identified and used, and that wasteful work practices,
unnecessary tools, unused materials are eliminated. work to standards, maintain standards, wear
safety equipment. SUSTAIN, this indicates the duty of everybody to follow rules, regulations,
instructions, notices, orders, appeals, etc. for maintaining good housekeeping and safety. These
