Historian of the brief Golden Age; Nicomedes "Nick" Marquez Joaquin

Onching M. Nicomedes On May 4, 1917, Joaquin was born in Paco, Manila. His mother
taught at a public school and his father served as a colonel in the Philippine Revolution of 1896.
In 1934, Nick Joaquin began producing short tales, poetry, and essays. After three years of
secondary study at the Mapa High School, the poet, fiction writer, essayist, biographer, dramatist,
and National Artist made the decision to stop. He was merely bored in class. He believed his
lecturers lacked sufficient knowledge. Even though he was a bright child who did not complete
high school, he found that he could learn more by reading books on his own, and his father's
library held a ton of the literature he liked to read. Throughout his whole life, he wrote so incredibly
effectively and about so many different aspects of the Filipino.He assisted in creating and served
as the union's leader for the pre-martial law Philippines Free Press staff. Unknown to the public,
Joaquin produced articles for the clandestine press during that dark time opposing Martial Law.In
a competition sponsored by the Dominican Fathers, his 1943 piece La Naval de Manila won him
the majority of the national praise. University of St. Thomas As a result of his writing abilities,
Tomas (UST) later granted him an Associate in Arts credential.

Nick Joaqin is a great writer, he has made a lot of literary works that became known to
many people and are considered as notable. Joaquin's works included the short-story collections
Tropical Gothic (1972) and Stories for Groovy Kids (1979), the play Tropical Baroque (1979), and
the collections of poetry The Ballad of the Five Battles (1981) and Collected Verse (1987). As he
was a writer and journalist best known for his short stories and novels in the English language.
Joaqin was conferred the rank and title of National Artist of the Philippines for Literature. By winning
the National Artist award for Literature, Nick Joaquín is considered probably the most esteemed writer
the Philippines has produced. So, he was considered as one of the most important Filipino writers,
along with Jose Rizal and Claro M. Recto, as he contributed a lot to our literature which makes him
important.

Joaquin worked as a proofreader for the Philippines Free Press before becoming a contributing
editor and essayist under the pen name 'Quijano de Manila' (Manila Old Timer). After WWII, Joaquin
worked as a journalist, becoming well-known as a Free Press reporter. He left the Philippines Free
Press in 1970 to become the editor of Asia-Philippine Leader. During the presidency of Ferdinand
Marcos, who took office in 1965, corruption began to fuel opposition to his administration. Joaquin was
suspended after martial law was declared in 1972. He later worked as the editor of the Philippine
Graphic and the publisher of the Women's Weekly.

Nick Joaqun, winner of the National Artist Award for Literature, is arguably the most renowned writer
the Philippines has produced. Joaquin came from a well-educated family and was published at the
age of 17. He left the Philippines to study in Hong Kong after winning a scholarship in a nationwide
essay contest. When he returned to Manila, he worked as a journalist for many years, and his highly
intellectual writing raised the country's journalism standards. The Woman with Two Navels by Joaquin
is required reading in Philippine literature. However, many of his short stories, such as "May Day Eve,"
are extremely accessible and enjoyable for those who are new to the Philippines.
