Executive Summary
The scope of this project is to “to detect and map the geothermal potential in
Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea”. To fight the effects of climate change and to
limit the dependency on fossil fuels several countries around the world are
exploring other options of reliable energy sources. Bioko Island located in the
Gulf of Guinea, in the oceanic sector of the Cameroon Hot Line. This Island is
composed mainly of three young (<1.33±0.07 Ma) strato-volcanoes: Pico Santa
Isabel, Pico Biao, and San Carlos. The island is composed mostly of basalt, alkali
basalt and hawaiites, and to a lesser extent mugearites.
Based on its surface geology and tectonic history, Bioko Island has a great
potential for geothermal resources, usually characterized by heat flows and
calderas related to volcanoes. Heat flow and fluids in the subsurface are usually
associated with high conductivities, which deems the choice of using
Magnetotelluric (MT, hereafter) to map such geological structural targets at
depth appropriate.
MT is a proven electromagnetic (EM) method for mapping subsurface
geoelectrical properties from surface-based measurements. The MT method
uses the propagation and attenuation of natural electromagnetic fields. The
natural sources for MT signals can be defined as:
• Source for low- frequency signal is originated from the interaction of the
solar wind with the earth’s magnetic field. This interaction produces low-
frequency (long period) electromagnetic energy that penetrates the earth.
• The high frequency signal (greater than 1 Hz) is created by world-wide
thunderstorm activities, usually near the equator. The energy created by
these storms travel around the earth in a wave guide between the earth’s
surface and the ionosphere, with part of the energy penetrates the earth.
These signal sources create time-varying electromagnetic waves. By
simultaneously measuring the time variation of both magnetic field (B) and
induced electric field (E), the electrical properties (e.g. electrical conductivity) of
the underlying material can be determined.
At each MT site, we measure the horizontal electric (Ex and Ey), and horizontal
(Bx and By) and vertical (Bz) magnetic field components. Figure 1 illustrates the
field setup of a MT site. According to the physical property of electromagnetic

to measure the N-S (Ex) and E-W (Ey) components of the horizontal electric field. Three
induction coils are used to measure the horizontal (Bx and By) and vertical (Bz) magnetic field
components.

Instruments
3D Consulting-Geo GmbH owns the most recent technology in MT
instrumentation. Namely, we have 6 complete systems of MTU-5C developed by
PHOENIX GEOPHYSICS LIMITED, Canada. These systems can cover a wide
spectrum of measurements: from AMT to LMT. More info can be found at:
http://phoenix-geophysics.com/
In addition to our own instruments, 3D Consulting-Geo GmbH has agreements
with multiple international partners to use their MT instruments to scale up or
speed up operations whenever needed.
Software
• Data processing and QC codes: We strongly believe that processing and
QC the data is substantial and need to be done in an accurate way.
Therefore, beside the standard processing software (EMpower), which is
delivered with the MT instruments, we use several other codes to perform
a multiple check of the quality of the data. Quality control of the data is
performed considering dimensionality and directionality of the stations
and analysing the different responses extracted from the data.
• Data visualization and post-processing: The team at 3D Consulting-Geo
GmbH has developed a visualization and post-processing software (3D-
Grid) as a tool to work with MT data prior running any modelling/inversion
process. This in-house developed tool allows us to work effectively with
MT data in terms of creating/visualizing/editing 3D models as well as
visualizing/editing MT data; also serves as data QC tools.
• Modelling and Inversion codes: One-dimensional deliverables (models
and data) are produced with the trans-dimensional Markov chain Monte
Carlo (McMC) approach of Green (1995) as implemented in Brodie & Jiang
(2018). Two-dimensional inversions use the finite elements (FE) code
MARE2DEM (Key & Ovall 2011; Key 2016). Three-dimensional inversions

employ our 3D inversion code “Modular System for EM” (ModEM), which
is well-known and used within both academic and industry sectors.
Pre- Acquisition:
• Scouting (~ 3-4 days): Prior the acquisition stage, the predefined locations
at which the MT data should be collected, must be scouted, and fully
permitted (permitting should be done by the client. Please refer to the
Terms and Conditions section below). The scouting is substantial and
serves to identify possible source(s) of noise which might affect the
measurements. Moreover, visiting the sites before starting the acquisition
will allow our team to get familiar with the field, know the access points,
decided where exactly the site should be installed and most importantly,
to get introduced the landowners. Note: If prior knowledge of
landowners and their respective holdings is available to the contractor,
then this database and 'local knowledge' would be greatly appreciated.
• Setting up accommodation for the staff, the field-office and storage (1-2
days). For our field crew, we need to find appropriate accommodation and
Acquisition:
The field acquisition is designed to be performed with minimal personnel
requirements. We envision to work with two or three teams with two members
each in charge of the installation, servicing of the remote reference site, and
retrieval of two stations per day.
This working scheme allows the installation of five stations per day, with a
recording period of up to 24 hours per site, with the priority of data collection
overnight where high-frequency MT signals are the strongest. Data is processed
and analysed daily for quality control.
For the data acquisition based on a sparse site distribution (5 km distancing
Figure 3 left) the recording of the data is expected to be completed in 16 days,
without re-recordings. Whereas, a shorter distancing of 2 km, as suggested in
Figure 3 (right), would result on 98 days of recording time without re-recordings.
Both time frames have been calculated for 5 field stations and 2 data acquisition
crews.
As previously mentioned, 3D Consulting-Geo GmbH have access to several
stations to scale-up activities, guaranteeing a shorter time for the data recording
if requested by the client or to clear our personnel for scheduling reasons.
Equipment will be sent at least two weeks before the planned start date to
ensure their availability and to be able to test them before the beginning of the
campaign.
Post-acquisition
After the data acquisition our teams will ship our equipment back and will take
the raw data back to our central office. Once data have arrived the following
steps are taken:
• Data processing, employing different processing scheme to ensure the
highest quality possible. Including: time series analysis, filtering, and
statistical analysis.
• One- to three-dimensional inversion, employing our state-of-the-art
software and scientific approach to achieve the best resolution,
depending on the client’s request.
• Preparation of technical reports including explanation of the data
analysis, inversion process and models interpretation.
Deliverables:
• Data acquisition
• MT processed datasets
• 3D models and integrated inversions
• Interpreted sections with a focus on local targets
• Technical report specifying all major findings
• … more is included in our pricing proposal.
