INTRODUCTION

This chapter describes background of the study; problem statement; research

questions; research objectives; scope and limitation; significance of research; and

operational Definition.

1.1. Background of Study

Learning is a process that alters a person's personality, and it shows up as an

improvement in both the quality and quantity of their behavior, including their
expanded knowledge, attitudes, habits, and cognitive abilities. Each person's
internal circumstances when learning can have a varied impact on their learning
activities. Motivation serves as one of those internal factors. The very nature of
motivation encourages a person to make an effort to adjust their behavior in a way
that better meets their needs. One of the characteristics that propels students to
desire to participate and direct their learning to attain certain objectives is
motivation (Arianti, 2019).
The existence of motivation will render the process of learning highly
exciting, and students' attitudes and desire to take part in learning will improve as
a result. Therefore, motivation plays a role in both teaching and learning.
However, a lack of interest and motivation will ultimately have a detrimental
effect on learning, particularly on pupils' capacity to master and learn English. In
order to motivate someone to complete a task and reach a desired outcome, one
must first attempt to persuade them to do so (Ariyanto & Sulistyorini, 2020;
Winata, 2021).
Learning motivation is essential for pupils. If pupils are motivated, the
process of teaching and learning in a classroom will go smoothly and achieve its
goals. By acting with curiosity, sharpness, attention, concentration, and tenacity,

1
students who are driven to learn can be discovered. Students who lack motivation
deliberately try to avoid learning tasks because they find them boring and difficult
to complete. Sani et al. (2020) assert that motivation is the fundamental urge that
directs a person's action.
According to the discussion above, researchers carried out a preliminary
investigation at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat to find any issues. By
conducting interviews with teachers and students about their motivation for
studying English, the preliminary research findings from January 9 through June
12, 2023, Students frequently pretend to have permission to use the restroom but
instead snack in the canteen, and students frequently use cellphones while in class.
Other issues include students who do not pay attention to teachers when they
explain things, late submission of assignments at school, and students who do not
finish assignments given at home. Due to these issues, students' academic
performance in English classrooms is falling, particularly their enthusiasm to
learn. According to the average value of the learning outcomes for tenth grade
science students at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat (X IPA), 57% of students
scored below the KKM and 43% of students scored above the KKM, which is
indicative of this.

Depending on the objectives to be met, each student's level of learning

motivation varies when engaging in academic activities at school. It is difficult to
meet learning objectives at school when student motivation levels differ. In order
to accomplish learning objectives, student motivation must be taken into account.
Learning will not function successfully without a high level of student drive.
Students' attitudes during the implementation of teaching and learning activities,
such as their interest, zeal, responsibility, enjoyment of completing assignments,
and responses to the teacher's stimulus, can reveal whether they are highly or
lowly motivated to learn (Sudjana, 2013: 61).
The desire for students to learn will not vanish; rather, it will change in ways
that either help them become better learners or do the opposite. Students who
struggle with motivation to learn have received a variety of treatments. The basis
of the problem, namely the student's own motivation to learn, has not yet been

2
addressed by the given remedy. A problem that is handled improperly will almost
certainly not be totally solved. In order for the ongoing issues to negatively affect
students. Because it is one of the things that motivates someone to learn,
motivation is significant in the learning process. It is important to identify
learning motivation and its effects on teachers and students because motivation in
learning activities can be thought of as the overall driving force within students
that creates learning activities, ensures their continuity, and gives them direction.
Slameto (2015) states that internal, external, and fatigue factors are examples
of success factors that may have an impact on the learning process. The
questionable internal element is enthusiasm for learning, whereas potential
external determinants include parents' roles and teachers' creative approaches to
instructing children.
Motivation, according to Ari & Sri (2017), is an internal process that serves
as one of the variables that propels students to desire to engage in and drive their
learning toward achieving particular objectives. Parents' support and the creatively
organized materials that teachers provide can be external motivators for students,
while the presence of a student's enthusiasm for learning can be an internal
motivator. Learning activities also demonstrate this motivation.
Astrid (2019) agrees, stating that factors from both inside and outside of an
individual, including the environment and the learning environment, can influence
how motivated an individual is to learn and acquire knowledge. These factors
include a desire to achieve success and a sense of need.
As for the factors that distinguish this research from other studies, which are
the location, sample, and methods used by this research and previous research, it
is important to conduct this research in order to assist and complement the
findings of previous research. With a survey approach, this study will concentrate
on students at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat. In contrast, research carried
out at SMK and SD used a quantitative methodology and the purposive sampling
method.

Referring to the problems described above, the researcher narrowed the scope of
the study to "Indentification of Student Learning Motivation and Influencing
Factors in English at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat".

1.2. Problem Statement

This study investigates problems faced by eleventh grade science students at

SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat, particularly in their learning process. These
issues include late assignments, poor home completion, and distractions like
snacking and cellphone use. These issues negatively impact academic
achievement and learning motivation. The researcher aims to investigate these
issues and their impact on students' learning and motivation.

1.3. Research Question

The questions for this research are as follow:

1. What is the learning motivation of tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 16

Seram Bagian Barat?

2. What are the factors that cause low and high learning motivation of tenth grade

students at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat?

1.4. Research Objective

The research objectives of this study are as follows, in accordance with the

research question above:

1. To find out learning motivation of tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 16

Seram Bagian Barat

2. To find out factors that cause low and high learning motivation of tenth

grade students at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat

1.5. Significances of the Study

4
This research has the potential to contribute to the field of education at the senior
high school level. as well as being used as a source of information in order to
improve the quality of education in schools, which leads to student learning
motivation. This research can also provide insight for future researchers about
elements that may affect student learning outcomes, especially in field studies as a
requirement to become a professional teacher.

1.6. Operational Definition

a. Student Learning Motivation

Motivation is the strength and desire a person has to carry out specific
objectives they have set for themselves. In general, motivation can aid in
understanding and elucidating individual behavior, including that of those who are
learning. One of the elements affecting student success is motivation for learning.
According to Ariyanto and Sulistyorini (2020), motivation is the process of trying
to persuade people to carry out a task in order to attain the desired result

1.3. Conceptual Framework

Learning is a process that alters a person's personality and improves

their behavior, including knowledge, attitudes, habits, and cognitive
abilities. Motivation plays a crucial role in both teaching and learning, as it
encourages individuals to adjust their behavior to better meet their needs.
Motivation is essential for students, as it drives them to participate and
direct their learning towards specific objectives. However, a lack of
motivation can negatively affect learning, particularly in English.

A preliminary investigation at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian Barat

revealed that students often pretend to have permission to use the restroom
but instead snack in the canteen, use cellphones while in class, and not pay
attention to teachers. This leads to a decline in students' academic

6
performance in English classrooms, particularly their enthusiasm to learn.
The level of learning motivation varies depending on the objectives to be
met, and it is difficult to meet learning objectives when motivation levels
differ. To achieve learning objectives, student motivation must be taken
into account. Students' attitudes during teaching and learning activities can
reveal their level of motivation.

The desire for students to learn will not vanish, but it will change in
ways that either help them become better learners or do the opposite.
Students who struggle with motivation to learn have received various
treatments, but the problem of the student's motivation to learn has not yet
been addressed. Motivation is significant in the learning process, as it is
the overall driving force within students that creates learning activities,
ensures continuity, and gives them direction. Factors such as parental
support, creatively organized materials, and learning activities can be
external motivators, while internal motivation can be influenced by the
presence of enthusiasm for learning.

This research focuses on students at SMA Negeri 16 Seram Bagian

Barat using a survey approach, contrasting previous research conducted at
SMK and SD. The scope of the study is "Indentification of Student
Learning Motivation and Influencing Factors in English at SMA Negeri 16
Seram Bagian Barat."
