Safety Concept for Buildings (1/3)
Structural design and physical arrangement of the buildings provide
protection from both external and internal hazards

Each safety system train is protected against propagation of internal

hazards (e.g. fire, high energy line break, flooding) from one train to any
other
Allocation of each train into a specific area or division that is separated from the other
trains
The 4 Safeguard Buildings correspond to the 4 safety divisions

All safety-related buildings are designed to withstand the effects of the

Safe Shutdown Earthquake and a Tornado

Some buildings are also designed to withstand an Aircraft Hazard and

Explosion Pressure Wave

Training Center AREVA NP GmbH Proprietary - CONFIDENTIAL

43 B257.OL3.001 Intro to EPR™ 10/2011 © AREVA NP - All rights are reserved, see liability notice
Safety Concept for Buildings (2/3)
Safety concept is a combination of hardened
structures and spatial separation:
Fully hardened by means of a protection
Shell for Safeguard Buildings (SGB) 2/3,
Reactor Building (RB), Fuel Building (FB)
Main Control Room (MCR) and Remote
Shutdown Station (RSS) are located inside
fully hardened SGB 2/3
Inner structures of SGB 2/3 and FB decoupled from outer protection walls to isolate the
consequences of an aircraft hazard
SGB 1/4 physically separated, limiting potential destruction to one division
Main Steam (MS) and Feedwater (FW) valve stations physically separated two-by-two
Safety functions performed by systems installed in other buildings ensured by physical
separation
• e.g. Emergency Diesels and Essential Service Water System (ESWS)

Training Center AREVA NP GmbH Proprietary - CONFIDENTIAL

44 B257.OL3.001 Intro to EPR™ 10/2011 © AREVA NP - All rights are reserved, see liability notice
Safety Concept for Buildings (3/3)
All buildings and structures, are arranged based on economical
optimization, hazard potential, and operation factors

Turbine Building is independent from the Nuclear Island

Turbine itself is located in a radial position with respect to the Reactor Building to
avoid the impact of a turbine missile.

Switchgear Building, containing the power supply and the

Instrumentation and Control (I&C) for the balance of plant, is located
next to the Turbine Building.
Both buildings are designed on the basis of technical requirements and safety
regulations and do not impact the Nuclear Island.
