Parts of Speech
A. Sentences are made up of words. Therefore, it is
important to understand the different categories of
words. They are called parts of speech.
Here are some common ones:
⎵娆 Nouns (n.) refer to people, places and things
e.g. Alex, father, town, book
≽娆 Verbs (v.) indicate an action or a state
e.g. do, walk, be, seem
⼊⭡娆 Adjectives (adj.) tell us more about nouns
e.g. beautiful, big, friendly, round
∗娆 Adverbs (adv.) tell us more about verbs, adjectives and other adverbs
e.g. loudly, usually, very, just, really, since
忋㍍娆 Conjunctions (conj.) join words or clauses together
e.g. and, because, so
ẋ⎵娆 Pronouns (pron.) used to replace nouns
e.g. I, it, them, you
⇵伖娆 Prepositions (prep.) used to talk about location, movement, time, etc.
e.g. at, beside, during, for, towards
≑婆娆 Interjections (interj.) show strong feelings like disgust, pain and surprise
e.g. Oh!, Ugh!, Wow!
旸⭂娆 Determiners (det.) used before nouns
e.g. a / an / the, many, some, this, that, every
Examples:

2. Mum prepared a big dinner for us.

B. Some words can have more than one part of speech.


Here are some examples:

shop = noun shop = verb


This shop sells sportswear. She loves to shop in Tsim Sha Tsui.
like = verb like = preposition
I like my father. I look like my father.
down = adverb down = preposition
The sun is going down now. We were walking down the hill.
though = conjunction though = adverb
Though his house is small, it is comfortable. We lost the game. It was a good experience
though.
