Practical Research 2 (Quantitative Research)

I. Instructions: Identify the following situations by writing the word quantitative or

qualitative on the space provided for.
Quantitative 1.A teacher conducts a survey to all students about their food preferences for the
new school canteen.
Qualitative 2.A researcher interviews a principal to find out the joys, challenges, and triumphs
in running a rural school.
Philosophical perspective 3.The researcher believes that the world is complex and that no
single variable or number can accurately describe it.
Quantitative 4. An engineer wanted to test his idea on a new bridge model and test the scale
model of the bridge to detect flaws in his design.
Philosophical perspective 5. The researcher believes that the world is an objective reality
governed by the laws of nature that can be understood and measured.
Quantitative 6. The researcher wanted to find out the impact of Alternative Work Arrangement
on the productivity level of Teachers.

Qualitative 7. The student-researcher attempts to find out students’ experiences on

Blended learning.

Quantitative 8. The teacher wanted to prove the relationship between work performance and
satisfaction of teachers.

Quantitative 9. The teachers wanted to ascertain the effectiveness of online teaching on

students’ academic achievement.

Quantitative 10. The teacher works on a research that determine the predictive value of
vocabulary proficiency on reading comprehension skills of the students.

Characteristics of Quantitative Research

1.The data are usually gathered using structured research instrument.
2.The results are based on larger sample size that are representative of the population.
3.The research study can usually be replicated or repeated given its high reliability.
4.Researcher has clearly defined research question to which objective answers are sought.
5. All aspects of the study are carefully designed before data are collected.
6.Data are in the form of numbers and statistics, often arranged in tables, charts, figures, or
other non-textual forms.
7.Project can be used to generalize concepts more widely, predict future results or
investigate causal relationships.
8. Researcher uses tools, such as questionnaire or computer software , to collect numerical
data.

II. The following statements are characteristics of research. Identify and write either
quantitative or qualitative research on the space provided for.

__________ 1. .Results can be generalized to the population of the study.

___________2.Use texts to answer research problems.
___________3.Employ survey questionnaire to gather data.
___________4.Use interviews to gather data.
___________ 5.Utilize statistics in analyzing data.
____________6.The physical reality is understood from the perspective or stories of the
participants.
____________7.Data can be objectively and reliably drawn from a sample and accurately reflect
reality
____________8.Predict and establish relationships, and generalize findings
____________9.Small, purposive and context-specific
___________ 10.Randomized and controlled for extraneous variables.
___________ 11.Large samples are usually needed to represent the population
____________12.Include document collection, participant observation, unstructured and formal
interviews and FGD
_____________13.Uses questionnaires, experimentation, and use of existing data
_____________14.Specific , testable and stated at the onset of the study
_____________15. Is objective, impartial and detached
_____________16. Hypothesis is tentative and evolves during the course of the study
_____________17. Deliberately interacts with participants in a personal way
_____________18. Structured, predetermined, formal and inflexible
_____________ 19. Free to use intuition and judgment as bases for deciding how to frame
questions
_____________ 20. The world or physical reality is explained by the laws of nature and
science.
III. Identify the kind of research shown in the following research situations by
writing the letter of your answer on the space provided for. You can have more than
one answer.

A – True Experimental E - Quasi-Experimental

B – Descriptive F – Cross – sectional

C – Predictive G – Retrospective

D – Exploratory H – Longitudinal

student.
_____ 2. Investigate the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder towards teen-agers’
academic performance.
_____ 3.Identify the learning styles of Grade 10 students and relate them with their academic
performance.
_____ 4. Determine the factors that might cause diabetes using samples who are already
diagnosed with type diabetes.
_____ 5. Determine the frequency and reasons of firecrackers-related cases in a hospital
during New Years Eve.

versus normal diets for those diagnosed with obesity
_____ 9. Randomly group participants into two groups. One group receives the new drug on
exercise endurance and the other group receives no treatment at all.
_____ 10. Investigate the effect of graphic organizers on the reading comprehension of
randomly selected Grade 10 students and compare the results to another class that did not use
graphic organizers.
