TOPIC: Definition of Variables
Week 2 Lesson 1
I.OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the learners CAN…
1. define the term variable and give examples; and
2. compare and contrast the different kinds of variables.

II.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

2.1 Summary of Essential Concept

Variables are properties or characteristics of events, objects or persons that can be
assigned with different values or amounts.
Dependent variable is the variable that changes as a result of an intervention or
experiment.
Independent variable is what the researcher manipulates to see if it changes the dependent
variable. It is hypothesized that it affects (Pulmones, 2016).

2.2 Testing of Knowledge

Identify the independent and the dependent variables in the following research cases by
writing your answers on the table.
3

Case 1.
To determine whether a diet of blueberries has an effect on aging , an experiment
involving 19-month old rats was undertaken. In this study, one group of rats were fed with
their standard diet while the other three groups were fed with diet supplemented with
blueberry , strawberry, or spinach powder, respectively. After eight weeks, the rats were given
memory test and motor skill test.
Case 2.
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) if given in mega doses, is known to reduce the occurrence of
cancer cell. To test this hypothesis, patients with known cancers were given mega doses of
vitamin C for a period of 12 weeks. After twelve weeks, screening tests were done to
determine decrease of cancer cell.
Case 3.
Lucy is an owner of a fashion accessories store. She surveyed her customers on their
preferences for accessories on a headband. She found her customers prefer ribbons in their
headbands. Thus, Lucy would stock up on ribbons because this will determine the number of
headbands with ribbons that can sell.

Are you aware that all of us are exposed to a new phenomenon? Certainly you are aware. This
phenomenon is affecting our day-to-day activities. However, we need to find out why and
how this phenomenon affected us. This can only done by engaging ourselves into research.

I.TOPIC Formulating Research Questions 24-29, 2020
Week: 2 Lesson 4
OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the learners can…

1.formulate research questions by:

1.1 stating the general statements; and

1.2 formulate specific questions.

II.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

1.1 Summary of Essential Concept
The research question gives the study its structure, direction, and guidepost (Pulmones,
2012). Good research questions provide an idea on the kind of data needed to be collected and
analyzed , as well as the type of data collection procedures that the researcher will use.
According to Pulmones (2012), a well crafted research question allows the readers and
other researchers to identify the variables being investigated in the study. Excellent research
questions should be formulated in such a way that they would require data collection and
analysis.
Example
Teachers’ Readiness in Teaching Using Modular Approach and Students’ Academic
Performance in Practical Research II
Given this Research topic, the general statement is:
This study attempts to determine the correlation between the level of readiness of
teachers in teaching using modular approach and the academic performance level of the
students of Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School in school year 2021 – 2022.
The specific questions are:
This study specifically attempts to answer the following questions:
15

1.What is the level of teachers’ readiness in teaching using modular approach in

Practical Research 2?
2.What is the academic performance level of the students in Practical Research 2?
3. Is there a significant correlation between the level of readiness of teachers in teaching
using modular approach and the academic performance level of the students in Practical
Research 2?
In stating the general statement of the research study, it must have the following:
1.Context refers to the main objective of the research study. In this particular example,
the context is , the correlation between the level of readiness of teachers in teaching using
modular approach and the academic performance level in Practical Research 2 of the
students
2. Place refers to the setting/location of the study. In this example, the place is
Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School
3. Time refers to the period the study was conducted. In this example, the period is
School Year 2020 -2021.
The quantitative research questions are classified into:
1.Descriptive question begins with “what”. It does not require hypothesis; and
2.Inferential question begins with: Is there a significant relationship; Is there a
significant difference or Does the variable significantly affect … These questions
require hypothesis.

1.2 Testing of Knowledge

Instructions: Read and answer the question.
1. How would you differentiate general statement from specific statement?
