1 . Rhythm Review 1-2 min

Have Sixteenth Note Samba playing as students enter your classroom.
Take attendance, if needed.
Give out project books from lesson 1
Remember all pre-assessment questions about rhythm (7-12) are covered in this
lesson's teaching.

Hint: To get the fastest internet speeds, preview all your screens ahead of time so they are
pre-loaded in your computer and close all open windows except for Quaver.

2 . Fixing Quaver Radio 3-5 min

Review the last session by having students explain the term "genre" in their own
words.
Today's lesson uses musical genres to demonstrate and review rhythm patterns and
notated rhythms.
Press the QFM 2 button and listen to the 5 selections on Quaver Radio, paying
particular attention to the rhythms in each piece. Invite students to improvise
movement to each selection to better feel the rhythmic flow of each one.
Have students determine the genre of the song and write their answer on page 5 of
their project book.
Ask the students to give a reason for their answer.
Invite a student to select the genre they think to be correct and then drag it to the
box under the preset.
Click the REVEAL button to see if the correct genre has been chosen.
Review each genre using the information below.
1. Everybody - Disco - Rhythm of the bass drum ("four on the floor") is common
in Disco along with violin and brass hooks.
2. Good Bye - Reggae - Rhythm of the guitar strum.
3. A Musical Joke - Classical balanced phrases and repeated rhythms.
4. Will It Ever Be the Same? - Rock - Driving rhythm of the guitar part.
5. Piano Concerto - Romantic - Passionate and loud and dynamic. (What rhythm
does the piano play when it comes into the piece?)
Emphasize that rhythm is one element that makes a musical genre unique.

3 . Analyzing Rhythms by Genre 5-8 min

Emphasize that each genre and style of music uses rhythm patterns.
Some rhythm patterns can be unique to a given style of music (reggae and rock).
Some rhythm patterns are simply choices by the composer that sound good to
him/her.
Explore some of the rhythms from the pieces in the previous screen.
Have students clap the rhythm patterns on the screen and aurally identify which
instrument plays that pattern.
In the last example by Tchaikovsky, the notation is missing.
Invite students to decide on and draw the rhythm pattern the piano plays when it
enters the piece (quarter notes).
How does understanding the structure and context of musical works inform
performance? (Essential Question)

4 . Sixteenth Note Samba (Rhythm 6-10 min

Clapper Olympics)
Use the three levels of Rhythm Olympics to review various rhythm notes and
patterns. Ask students to identify notes that are used (half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth).
Before clicking the backing track tempos on the screen, review common tempo
terms Largo, Moderato, Allegro and Presto.
For an added challenge, use the backing tracks!
Click the bronze medal and have students perform the four patterns using numbers,
rhythmic syllables, body percussion, or non-pitched percussion instruments. The
four patterns must be correct to win that medal.
To win silver, click the silver medal and correctly perform the four patterns that
appear. Repeat the process to win gold.
At gold level, remind students of the word 'syncopation.'
Continue the three level activity as time permits.
For an added challenge, perform the rhythm patterns along with accompaniment
tracks.
Note: This rhythm olympics activity is linked to the song Sixteenth Note Samba in
Classplay, and because of technical issues, cannot be retitled here. The three tracks
are not intended to reflect authentic samba, but are included (if you choose to use
them) to help students keep a steady tempo as they play the rhythm patterns.

Variation: This activity can be done in groups. Each group claps what they think is the
correct rhythm. Points are awarded for correct answers.

5 . Working as a Team 3-5 min

For the majority of this project and for most of the activities in 6th grade, students
are required to work together in cooperative groups.
Before dividing the class into groups, click each word and discuss its relevance to
teamwork
Respect - Honor each other's strengths and weaknesses.
Communication - Listen first. Speak second. (Allow all members of the group
to share their views.)
Responsibility - Complete the task assigned to the best of your ability.
Cooperation - Work through differences to accomplish a mutual goal.
Discuss the roles of each group member for the activity to come.

6 . Group Work Time 5-6 min

In cooperative groups (of 4), have each student create 2 measures of rhythm in
either 4/4, 3/4, or 2/4 time using the Rhythm Composition Pieces worksheet
(downloadable from the Worksheets button in the Lesson Detail Screen).
Each student should cut out the notation blocks in their Rhythm Composition Pieces
worksheet and arrange the cut out blocks into a 2 measure rhythm pattern.
Have students write down the pattern they have created in the "My Rhythm Pattern"
box on page 6 of their project book.
When all group members have composed and written down their two-measure
rhythm pattern, have them combine and order their two-measure rhythm patterns
into an eight-measure rhythm pattern under "My Group's Combined Rhythm
Patterns" on page 6.
Encourage students to use each type of note or rest available.
Students should work with their group to ensure their patterns are appropriate for
them to read, write, and perform.
The entire group is responsible for ensuring each measure has the correct number
of beats.
Use the combined rhythm patterns in the next screen.

Rhythm Composition Pieces can be downloaded from Worksheets.

7 . Rhythm Composition 5-6 min

Using the combined rhythm patterns from the previous screen, practice performing
the rhythm composition as a group, either chanting with numbers, rhythm syllables,
using body percussion, or non-pitched percussion instruments.
Have each group create their rhythm patterns on the screen, perform it for the class,
then teach it to the class. (This skill will be used in depth with the busking project.)

Note: Activate the backing tracks on the screen by dragging a meter sign to the staff. For
extra challenge, have the students add in articulation and dynamic markings to their 8
measure scores

8 . In today's lesson, we learned to... 2-3 min

Click on the bullet points to highlight and review the learning objectives.
Allow students time to write one or two sentences in their journal about the day's
lesson on page 16 of their project book.
Note: More journaling time is available in the extended section.
How does understanding the structure and context of musical works inform
performance? (Essential Question)

9 . Raving Rhythm Waterways (FULL 7-10 min

SCORE)
The purpose of the extended activities in this project is to allow the teacher to further
strengthen area of weakness identified in the pre-assessment.

The Extend section reviews note durations, and sixteenth notes as well as looking at disco
and reggae in more detail. There is also additional journaling time.

Review elements of notation by singing this song.

Play Raving Rhythm Waterways for the students and discuss all the notation
elements they see in the score.
Invite them to count and tap the different rhythms in the song (using numbers or
rhythm syllables).
Using the Raving Rhythm Waterways New Lyrics worksheet, engage students in
creating their own verses that fit the rhythm patterns.
For added challenge, click on the pink note button (next to the staff ) to turn off the
note highlighting.
Note: This is a good cross curriculum literacy exercise.

The Raving Rhythm Waterways melody is printed at the end of the Lesson Plan. The score,
lyrics, and new lyrics can be downloaded from Worksheets.

10 . Disco Book - Advanced 6-10 min

Enrich students' understanding of Disco music, a genre that has a driving bass drum
rhythm as a distinctive style feature.

Explore Disco music using the Disco Advanced Venue Book.

Ask students to make a list of elements that make disco music sound unique.
Discuss elements such as timbre, tempo, and rhythm.
Invite students to listen for a repeated pattern in all of the disco music they hear.
As students listen, encourage them to isolate the bass drum part in their minds.
Note: If students complete the quiz, they get new items for their avatar.

11 . Sixteenth Note Samba (Lyrics) 3-5 min

Review note names and note lengths.

Play Sixteenth Note Samba.

Explain that sixteenth notes are typically beamed into groups of 4 and are each
worth one fourth of a beat.
The time signature is 4/4, so a half note gets two beats, whereas a quarter note, two
beamed eighth notes, and four beamed sixteenth notes each get one beat.
Have students play the echo section using body percussion (clapping, patting legs,
stomping feet, and so on).
Repeat the activity, singing the song with the audio track.

The Sixteenth Note Samba melody is printed at the end of the Lesson Plan. The score and
lyrics can be downloaded from Worksheets.

12 . Create a Reggae Band 9-12 min

Reinforce students' understanding of rhythm and syncopation by performing a Reggae
groove.

Press PLAY (bottom of screen) and listen to all tracks played together.
Then listen to the four instruments parts played separately, having students perform
the rhythm of each part using body percussion.
Divide the class into four groups, assigning one of the instrument parts to each
group.
Lead each group through their part separately before putting the parts together.
Once all parts have been played separately, put them together to form your own
Reggae band!
Time permitting, rotate parts and play again.

13 . Journal Time 5-8 min

Allow students more time to reflect on this lesson.

Give students the opportunity to journal (page 16) about any new knowledge they
have learned in the lesson.

14 . Homework
Extend the idea of rhythm and genre to students' music.

Tell students that you will be playing your favorite song of all time during the next
lesson. Ask them to bring their favorite (and most appropriate) song to class.
The students should analyze the rhythms in their favorite songs, and determine if
there are any repeated patterns that make the song unique.
