1 . Choreographing Busking Routines 1-2 min

Have Busking Routine playing as students enter your classroom.

Take attendance, if needed.
Review what was covered in last session and objectives for this session.

Hint: To get the fastest internet speeds, preview all your screens ahead of time so they are
pre-loaded in your computer and close all open windows except for Quaver.

2 . Student Goals 2-4 min

Review the project goals with students.

Groups should be working exclusively on Goal 3 today.
Have groups self-assess their progress.

3 . Busking Video Routines 3-5 min

This lesson focuses on choreography and creativity in performance. Choose one of

the busking routines and analyze which non-musical elements were added to the
performance.
Discuss how those non-musical elements increased the entertainment value.
Have students brainstorm ideas of how to add entertainment to their pieces.

4 . Ideas For A Successful Routine 18-24 min

Discuss each checklist point (clicking on it to highlight the line), asking students
how each point would apply to their routine.
Challenge students to apply at least three checklist suggestions to their routine to
fulfill Goal 3.

In addition, as teacher walks around the room:

Check to see if students' rhythm patterns are scored accurately.

Ensure that each member of the group has a part for the presentation (and thus, is
contributing to his/her group)!
Challenge students to higher levels of excellence.
Discuss costume and prop ideas with each group, and the possibility of decorating
the instruments.
Ask each group about any technical parts for which they will need assistance from
the teacher.
If groups are using QGrooves or QBackBeat for backing tracks, you will need to log
into each Quaver account and open the correct file that the students will be using
for their backing tracks.

7 . Careers in Music - Hall of Fame 7-11 min

Help students realize that the title of "performer" requires more than just stage presence.

Many famous musicians receive their start performing for friends, family, in church,
or on the street as a busker.
The life of an entertainer is more than just being able to play an instrument or sing
well.
Ask students what talents and character traits exemplify a good
performer/entertainer. For example, charisma, musicianship, confidence, creativity,
determination, and ability to accept criticism.
Discuss the fact that being a professional not only means getting paid, but also
performing when you don't feel like it.
Explain the long journey performers take to become "discovered:"
Open mic nights and artist showcases
Education/lessons
Recording demo tapes and sending to record labels
Marketing themselves through social media and word of mouth
Have students research one of their favorite performers, mapping their journey to
stardom. Tell students they need to be prepared to share their research in the next
lesson.

8 . Making Music Worldwide - Rasping 7-12 min

Stick
Extend students' understanding of percussion instruments and found sounds.

Many percussion instruments, such as the rasping stick (an idiophone), were initially
"found sounds."
Most of the instruments heard in the busking routines could also be described as
"idiophones."
Keyword: Idiophone - Any object that creates a sound when you strike, scrape,
shake, or rattle it.
Have students write the definition on the Keywords page of their Project Book.
(page 15)
Discuss other instruments that fit this category.
Play the introductory video, pausing as necessary to answer student questions.
Have students look at the playing techniques in the "How to Play" video.
Challenge students to find found sounds that will imitate the rasping stick (rhythm
sticks, guiros, backpack zippers).
In small groups or individually, invite students to follow Vinay's easy challenge.

9 . QGrooves 8-11 min

Allow students more time to create their optional backing tracks in QGrooves.

One of the challenges of this project is for all four group members to play in time to
a steady beat.
Using a backing track is one way students can stay together during their
performance.
Use the QGrooves example to show students what a simple backing track would
sound like.
Once created, invite groups to play their ostinato patterns along with the track.
Discuss whether it made their performance easier or harder.

Note: Students can access this Creative in one of two ways. It can be assigned through
Resource Manager, exactly as seen in this lesson, or students can use this version accessible
through the Creatives button on their Student Dashboard. For more information on how to
use QGrooves, click on the Help button.

10 . Busking Beat 8-11 min

Allow students more time to create their optional backing tracks in QBackbeat.

One of the challenges of this project is for all four group members to play in time to
a steady beat.
Using a backing track is one way students can stay together during their
performance.
Use the QBackbeat example to show students what a simple backing track would

For more information on how to
use QBackBeat, click the Help button.

11 . Busking Video Routines 5-6 Mins

Before watching the video routines, briefly discuss appropriate audience behavior
for both live and recorded performances, such as this.
Have students watch the video examples which show a variety of completed
Busking projects.
Ask the students what they liked about the performances, and what made them
effective.
Evaluate with students which project they thought was the most effective and why.
Discuss the elements of a quality performance: Creativity, Entertainment, Teamwork,
Practice
Note: Project Book Pages 4-7 include the ostinato patterns and arrangements used
by the group for each routine. This can be used as a continuing reference point
throughout the busking project
