million. Indonesia has 714 tribes, over 1,100 local languages, and 17 thousand
islands. We live in diversity and have different religions, tribes, and cultures. I am
very grateful that Indonesia was able to maintain brotherhood, tolerance, peace, and
unity in diversity.
Indonesia has the state foundation of Pancasila and the national motto of "Unity in
Diversity." Diversity is the gift of God that must be maintained. Diversity is the
source of strength that makes us a strong nation. However, as a very diverse nation,
we must not neglect maintaining unity.
People who practice the concept of Wasathiyah Islam, or moderate and just Islam,
will generally show the following characteristics:
1. Balance in Worship
They carry out their worship with balance and not excessively. They comply with
religious obligations such as prayer, fasting, and zakat, but also do not neglect social
and family responsibilities.
They value diversity and interact with various groups in society without
discrimination. They respect other people's beliefs and views, even if they differ.
They try to be fair in everything, both in deciding personal cases and in community
affairs. They prioritize wisdom in making decisions.
They uphold good morals, such as honesty, politeness, friendliness and generosity.
They avoid violent behavior, extremism and actions that harm others.
They value the importance of education and knowledge in their lives. They strive to
continue learning and developing.
They tend to seek understanding through open dialogue and discussion, rather than
adopting narrow or dogmatic views.
8. Avoid Extremism
They avoid extreme attitudes in all their forms, both in religion and in political or
social views.
They recognize and promote gender equality, respect women's rights, and maintain
balance in family and community roles.
They care about welfare and social justice, seeking to overcome economic and social
inequalities in society.
They show empathy for the suffering of others, provide assistance to those in need,
and try to relieve the suffering around them.
They try to resolve conflicts in a peaceful and fair manner, without taking extreme
measures or harming other parties.
