ID-GEL EX
ID-GEL EX bentonite extender is a flocculating polymer capable of doubling the yield of bentonite used to
formulate low-solids, non-dispersed systems. ID-GEL EX has the ability to provide increased viscosity without
an excessive amount of clay solids. It is used most often in low hardness, freshwater fluids.
Application
ID-GEL EX, with its twofold yield, can maintain a given viscosity with one half the normal clay solids. This makes
ID-GEL EX an excellent additive for low-solids drilling fluids. ID-GEL EX also tends to cause reactive drill solids,
especially fine silty ones, to form agglomerates and settle out. This further enhances its use as an additive in
either weighted or un-weighted, nondispersed drilling fluid systems. It can be used as a selective flocculant.
3
The recommended initial treatment is 0.05 lb/bbl (0.143 kg/m ) of ID-GEL EX. Subsequent treatments are
based on bentonite additions, with one 2-lb bag of ID-GEL EX for each five to eight 100-lb (45.4-kg) sacks of
bentonite added. ID-GEL EX is most effective in low salinity (<3,000 mg/l chlorides) and low-hardness fluids.
Soda ash should be used to control hardness levels below 300 mg/l.
Advantages
Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions as described in
the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
